{"id":2076801,"date":"2025-10-08T10:27:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T10:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2076801"},"modified":"2025-10-08T10:27:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T10:27:05","slug":"hammer-museums-made-in-l-a-2025-a-look-at-the-participating-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/hammer-museums-made-in-l-a-2025-a-look-at-the-participating-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"Hammer Museum&#8217;s Made in L.A. 2025: A look at the participating artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>The built environment of Los Angeles \u2014 as well its opaque soul \u2014 is on display at UCLA\u2019s Hammer Museum as it opens the seventh edition of its popular Made in L.A. biennial, featuring 28 artists with deep connections to the sprawling metropolis. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2023-10-03\/review-the-hammer-museums-made-in-la-biennial-2023\">The 2023 exhibition<\/a>, titled \u201cActs of Living,\u201d was largely informed by the pandemic. This year there is no title  or theme, with curators Essence Harden and  Paulina Pobocha relying on the work itself to shine a light on the amorphous nature of the city.<\/p>\n<p>During a sneak-peek tour of the still-unfinished galleries a few days before the show\u2019s   opening last Saturday, Harden and Pobocha discussed the finer points of the  exhibition, including how they staged the work by juxtaposing various artists and historical references  to highlight the interconnections of the art, rather than devoting each gallery to a single artist or time frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s a Venn diagram, there\u2019s a place in this Venn diagram where every artist overlaps in terms of their interest,\u201d said Pobocha. \u201cSo much of this work is about Los Angeles. cinder block murals and neon art by Patrick Martinez; giant sculptures of doors representing seasons and  memories by Amanda Ross-Ho; an interactive painting by Gabriela Ruiz  about the omnipresence of surveillance in the city, particularly in Black and brown communities; Davis died earlier this year at age  82.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you get the most people to see the most art? And for L.A., that means the freeways,\u201d said Harden. \u201cBut again, the freeways are fundamental structures that divided the city and created all kinds of underclasses, which really affected lots of people of color and lots of people who were working class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis, however, inverted that paradigm to utilize the freeway as a unifier, she added.<\/p>\n<p>The show features wall text with a quote by  Beat poet and writer Jack Kerouac. \u201cL.A. is the loneliest and most brutal of American cities,\u201d it reads, echoing a common critique of one of the world\u2019s most misunderstood urban areas.
