At home I don\u2019t listen to any metal, but tour is when I get most of my metal fix in. I end up listening to the bands we\u2019re with. You realize a part is too complicated, or isn\u2019t musical or digestible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at the gym once and heard Guns \u2018n\u2019 Roses. <em>Sweet Child O\u2019 Mine<\/em> is a terrible song \u2013 I hate Axl\u2019s voice and don\u2019t even like Slash\u2019s playing, but it stands the test of time. Nowadays music comes and goes in less than a year, yet there are bands from 30, 40 years ago, and people are still excited to hear it, and I\u2019m like, \u2018How?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was my main inspiration \u2013 writing something timeless. On the last record I got used to putting the kitchen sink in, so trying to write songs that were digestible, anthems, or arena-style songs was very much a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor:<\/strong> \u201cI agree. But I\u2019m definitely excited to unveil <em>Glenwood<\/em>. Adam and I sat in a piano room at the studio going over verse harmonies, and we got super hyped on it. It\u2019s got some interesting harmonies, not just typical thirds the whole way. That track definitely keeps me on my toes, performance-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were the biggest inspirations for the new album?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>De Micco: <\/strong>\u201cWhen we wrote <em>Pain Remains<\/em> we were feeling behind in life \u2013 living with parents, losing band members, or changing labels \u2013 so we were writing with a kind of vengeance. Our lives have changed so much since then. The pressure now is having all these great things I\u2019m scared to lose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my whole life I\u2019ve been writing from this angry perspective, but now things are going great I don\u2019t have the same fuel. That was a challenge! But back then I also don\u2019t think we could have had fun and written <em>War Machine<\/em>, a meat-and-potatoes <em>Headbangers Ball<\/em>-style song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor:<\/strong> \u201cFor me it was a need to do better. It\u2019s like that great saying: \u2018Art isn\u2019t really finished; it\u2019s just abandoned.\u2019 That\u2019 kind of shit keeps me awake at night. My whole thing with playing live is making it as seamless as possible. I read an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/steve-vai\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/steve-vai\">Steve Vai<\/a>\u2026 I don\u2019t like Steve Vai all that much either \u2013 \u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor: <\/strong>\u201c\u2013 Blasphemy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>De Micco: <\/strong>\u201cHe said, \u2018I like to make my music complicated \u2013 I don\u2019t want my setup to be.\u2019 That stuck with me. The only change is getting my first custom build from Ibanez. Minus the paint job, it\u2019s the same RGD body as before; same string gauge, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-picks\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-picks\">pick<\/a> thickness, pickups, everything. But I was like, \u2018You don\u2019t have a tiger-striped guitar. It\u2019s not an option, so I need to <em>make<\/em> it an option!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor:<\/strong> \u201cMy setup is almost identical to Adam\u2019s; we both use Ibanez RGDs and Fortin profiles on the Kempers, same picks and string gauge. I literally plug in, turn on the Kemper, and use that tone from the start to the end of the set. I\u2019m on Fishman pickups, and prefer the EverTune bridge as I don\u2019t really do any leads or bending. I like it to be as simple and stable as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>De Micco:<\/strong> \u201cI just want to focus on performing. Playing live is about connecting with the audience. Have you won over any big-name fans or players?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor:<\/strong> \u201cWintersun were a huge influence on me as a teenager. They\u2019re technical wizards. I learned one of their songs, I made a short insignificant post about it, and Jari M\u00e4enp\u00e4\u00e4 saw it and hit me up. He was like, \u2018Dude, that was awesome! I checked out Lorna Shore \u2013 you guys are great!\u2019 That meant a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>De Micco:<\/strong> \u201cWe played a festival with Dream Theater and I wanted <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/john-petrucci\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/john-petrucci\">John Petrucci<\/a> to listen to us\u2026 But I don\u2019t think he did!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Connor:<\/strong> \u201cI listened to <em>them<\/em> \u2013 I don\u2019t think the favor was returned!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>With extreme bands like Cannibal Corpse and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/meshuggah\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/meshuggah\">Meshuggah<\/a> now household names, why do you think heavy guitar music is so powerful in 2025? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>De Micco: <\/strong>\u201cPeople are finally accepting there\u2019s a place for it.
