Why we can\u2019t get enough of cartoons."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As long as I\u2019ve had the dexterity to flip channels, I\u2019ve found solace from burger-flipping eccentrics \u2014 first through watching <em>SpongeBob SquarePants<\/em> as a kid<em>, <\/em>and later <em>Bob\u2019s Burgers. <\/em>The fact that these shows are still wildly popular after years on the air, despite ever-changing trends in television and the ways we watch it, is comforting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I\u2019m not alone in my love of cartoons. The biggest streaming show of 2025 so far isn\u2019t the Emmy-winning hospital drama <em>The Pitt, <\/em>the often-discussed vacation dramedy <em>The White Lotus <\/em>or even tried-and-true old episodes of <em>Friends. <\/em>It\u2019s <em>Bluey, <\/em>the animated children\u2019s program about a talking dog who lives in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/top-10-most-streamed-shows-201332837.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:report from market research firm Nielsen;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">report from market research firm Nielsen<\/a>, U.S. audiences streamed more than 25 billion minutes of <em>Bluey <\/em>between January and June 2025. It\u2019s been lauded as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/bluey-best-kids-tv-show.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one of the best shows for kids of our time,;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">one of the best shows for kids of our time,<\/a> also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/bluey-grows-up-in-surprise-for-some-parents-seeing-her-change-hits-home-190507076.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:beloved by the parents;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">beloved by the parents<\/a> who watch it with their little ones. But the Nielsen list makes clear that animation is something you grow up alongside \u2014 many of these popular shows have been on TV consistently since the late 1990s, with audiences that continue to tune in for more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The high watch times for cartoons could be enormous for a few practical reasons. Many of these shows have vast catalogs \u2014 <em>Family Guy <\/em>has 450 22-minute episodes and <em>Bluey <\/em>has 154 7-minute episodes, compared to buzzy live-action comedies and dramas that typically have between 10 to 20 longer episodes \u2014 so there are fundamentally more minutes of them to watch. Animated series rarely follow narrative arcs across multiple episodes or deal with major changes to characters and settings, so viewers can easy jump in at any point during a season. It\u2019s a bit like magic, animator <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/brandonkosters.com\/multimedia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brandon Kosters;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Brandon Kosters<\/a> tells Yahoo. That makes them a perfect medium for kids, who tend to let their imaginations run wild. The fact that <em>Bluey <\/em>and <em>SpongeBob <\/em>are often associated with childhood further cultivates feelings of warmth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To rack up viewership numbers like these, though, it\u2019s clear that children aren\u2019t the only ones tuning in \u2014 adults are too. Not only do they fondly remember the shows they watched in their youth, but they\u2019re willing to watch them over and over again with their own children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnimation is compelling to people for the same reason that magic tricks and puppetry are,\u201d Kosters says. \u201cThere is the nostalgic element, and the part that evokes warm memories from childhood, but there&#8217;s another part, which deals with our innate need to suspend disbelief, and explore spaces which feel fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Even when cartoons aren\u2019t for kids, like <em>Family Guy <\/em>or <em>South Park, <\/em>they still tap into that over-the-top fantasy realm that makes everything feel possible. That\u2019s why so many of them are used as a vehicle for social and political commentary, as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringling.edu\/about\/faculty\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Paul Downs;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Paul Downs<\/a>, interim head of the computer animation department at Ringling College of Art and Design, tells Yahoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnimation has actually grown up with us. They are packed with visual gags and cultural references that encourage people to view them over and over again.
