\u201cI got a call out of the blue, and they\u2019re usually the best calls,\u201d says Boyd Holbrook. Such was the case for his role as Johnny Cash in \u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d which was followed shortly by a call to join \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d for its fourth season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what I did in the past life to get that,\u201d says Holbrook, speaking back to the call about \u201cThe Morning Show.\u201d \u201cIt came in and I just took a second to sit with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
More from WWD<\/strong><\/p>\n Holbrook, who is 44, joins Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie and more in the smash success Apple TV+ series about the making of network news in this day and age. Holbrook plays Brodie, a podcaster who is beloved by a young male audience for his provocative, controversial takes, nodding to the rise of bro podcasters in today\u2019s zeitgeist. Brodie\u2019s show was acquired by the network that owns \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d making him now a colleague of the names above.<\/p>\n \u201cThe show reflects reality in a big way. You\u2019re seeing all these breakaway podcasters do their thing and there\u2019s a real audience for this, and I\u2019ve got my favorites too. And I love learning about all these random detail jobs and what people do for a living,\u201d Holbrook says of Brodie.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he is brash. He\u2019s very blunt. His brand is kind of saying the thing that maybe people are thinking about or is not appropriate to say right now,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd I think he\u2019s rewarded by the amount of followers that\u2019s there, and that people are seeing themselves in him by doing these risky takes on stuff. But I think for me, what\u2019s the truth in that? There\u2019s a person underneath there that\u2019s also throwing a lot of smoke for you not to see who I really am. And I think why I like doing this job is finding that out and being honest about that and showing the humane part of the character. That\u2019s the fun part for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Prior to landing the role, Holbrook knew \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d was the \u201cindustry darling\u201d that everyone talked about, but hadn\u2019t watched it. Brodie interacts mostly with Aniston\u2019s character, Alex, the most senior person on \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d with tensions brewing between the two thus far in the season. She is a traditional news person who views the shock jock approach of Brodie\u2019s brand of media to be shallow, but she can\u2019t ignore the hold over the network he\u2019s amassing.<\/p>\n \u201cShe is the perfect dose of all the special bits,\u201d Holbrook says of Aniston. \u201cShe\u2019s funny, she\u2019s professional, she has amazing timing as a comedian, as an actor, like a legend to work with. But you have to forget about that. And that\u2019s the trick. But she\u2019s wonderful to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n Holbrook started work on \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d directly following \u201cA Complete Unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOne was a lot of technical things to give the essence of someone. And then this was like no gimmicks on it at all. Just out, vulnerable, skin off, no protection from the elements. That\u2019s the person. And I think that\u2019s why you can\u2019t judge these characters,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to get at is you can\u2019t make [Brodie] want to be liked. Sometimes in life, people don\u2019t like you. That\u2019s OK. Sometimes people are oil and water. That\u2019s OK.
