Ryan Murphy\u2019s \u201cMonster\u201d anthology series has faced frequent criticism for its portrayal of shocking crimes, but season 3 star Charlie Hunnam thinks viewers might be complicit.<\/p>\n
During a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Hunnam, who plays the titular killer in \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story,\u201d questioned who the show\u2019s real villain is. <\/p>\n \u201cIs it Ed Gein who was abused and left in isolation and suffering from undiagnosed mental illness and \u2026 that manifested in some pretty horrendous ways? Or was the monster the legion of filmmakers that took inspiration from his life and sensationalized it to make entertainment and darken the American psyche in the process?\u201d he said. \u201cIs Ed Gein the monster of this show, or is Hitchcock the monster of the show? Or are we the monster of the show because we\u2019re watching it?\u201d<\/p>\n Legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s 1960 film \u201cPsycho\u201d is based on the 1959 novel of the same name, which is loosely inspired by Gein\u2019s story. Tom Hollander plays Hitchcock in \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Gein committed at least two murders, but he is suspected of killing seven other people. He was also a bodysnatcher who dug up corpses to make clothing and household items out of human body parts.<\/p>\n Gein was arrested in 1957 shortly after the disappearance of Bernice Worden. During a search of Gein\u2019s home and property, police found Worden\u2019s decapitated body and head. As Flicks\u2019<\/a> Clarisse Loughrey wrote, the Netflix series \u201chappily damns\u201d Hitchcock and others for profiting off murder, but doesn\u2019t \u201caddress its own complicity.\u201d<\/p>\n One X user called the series \u201cexploitative shock\u201d created only to \u201cscore the parasitic Ryan Murphy another hit.\u201d <\/p>\n Another person slammed Hunnam\u2019s view that the show has more than one villain. <\/p>\n \u201cMonster: The Ed Gein Story is the height of sensationalism trash. There\u2019s one monster in this story. It\u2019s Ed Gein. Period,\u201d they tweeted alongside a link to Hunnam\u2019s Hollywood Reporter interview. <\/p>\n Hunnam told the outlet that he \u201cnever felt like we were sensationalizing\u201d Gein\u2019s crimes during the making of the show. <\/p>\n \u201cI never felt on set that we did anything gratuitous or for shock impact,\u201d Hunnam said. \u201cIt was all in order to try to tell this story as honestly as we could.\u201d<\/p>\n Seasons 1 and 2 of \u201cMonster\u201d focused on Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers, respectively.
