From his latest statement about the reaction to his new song \u201cBad News,\u201d it sounds like he\u2019d really like to deescalate the situation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgijvyn400003b6qfjkfdvbp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unfortunately for him, that\u2019s not likely to happen very quickly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgihipow00083d60w69bqmg1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It all began when the country music star <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPWkQ4CEcNp\/\" target=\"_blank\">previewed his new song<\/a> late last week, which seems to critique the recent <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/03\/us\/chicago-apartment-ice-raid\">raid activity<\/a> by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgii1a5p000h3d60ae94ck4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lyrics include references to ICE coming to \u201cbust down your door, try to build a house no one builds no more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgik7h7x000d3b6qaniev7iq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Amid mounting furor, Bryan wrote in a statement posted to his Instagram Stories on Tuesday that the song, written months ago, is about \u201chow much I love this country and everyone in it more than anything\u201d and \u201call of us coming out of this divided space.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgik7y7b000f3b6qugkh0ptn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wasn\u2019t speaking as a politician or some greater-than-thou a*****e, just a 29 year old man who is just as confused as everyone else,\u201d he wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgihaksg00003d603oixpoju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He hoped that when people hear the rest of the song, \u201cyou will understand the full context that hits on both sides of the aisle.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgiioevc000l3d60fp1ous1t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Regarding the reaction the song lyrics have stirred up, he said that \u201ceveryone using this now as a weapon is only proving how devastatingly divided we all are. We need to find our way back.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgiiwpp1000q3d60v7j2to9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo see how much s**t it stirred up makes me not only embarrassed but kind of scared,\u201d he wrote toward the end of his message. \u201cLeft wing or right wing we\u2019re all one bird and American. CDs of the bands\u2019 music were destroyed by protestors. In one case, an Entertainment Weekly cover story later revealed, some copies were crushed by a tractor. And, as Maines later sang in their hit \u201cNot Ready to Make Nice,\u201d they received death threats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgik3fpm00093b6qqc80447y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The message being sent to The Chicks by the overwhelmingly conservative country music fanbase was clear: You\u2019re not allowed to ruffle feathers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgijh6dr000d3d60a5dknn14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At first, the band tried to calm the furor, with Maines apologizing to Bush in a statement \u201cbecause my remark was disrespectful\u201d and \u201cI feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.\u201d (Note: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/dixie-chicks-natalie-maines-donald-trump-coronavirus-response-gaslighter-9348072\/\" target=\"_blank\">She appears to now feel quite differently<\/a>.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgijkcrp000g3d60hyok9oir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two months later, if the controversy had begun to cool, the band offered up fresh fuel, appearing nude on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, where band member Martie Maguire admitted they felt \u201clet down by our industry.\u201d Country music, specifically. But also their peers, like the late <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/toby-keith-and-chicks-natalie-maines-revisiting-their-2003-feud-8559657\" target=\"_blank\">Toby Keith<\/a>, who projected a doctored image of Maines and Saddam Hussein during one of his concerts after the controversy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgijn7vn000j3d60p0en8kd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEveryone has the right to say something, and he does,\u201d Maines told Entertainment Weekly. \u201cI respect that more than people who say nothing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgijnpid000m3d60gdw3226n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And The Chicks had no plans to become those people, nor have they. In the time since, they\u2019ve aligned themselves with movements like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/21\/politics\/the-chicks-dnc-country-progressive-politics\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> and voiced their support for LGBTQ rights and gun control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgikqe1q000o3b6qyxr2h4wo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2020, they <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/entertainment\/2020\/07\/23\/the-chicks-band-name-change-ctn-sot-vpx.cnn\">dropped \u201cDixie\u201d<\/a> from their name because the term holds \u201ca lot of negative connotations and harkens back to a time in our country that brought pain to so many people,\u201d Maines <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/gaslighter-no-1-top-country-albums-chart-the-chicks\/\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgihx96s00023d603rhv8wag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hot-button issues have only grown exponentially hotter, more polarized and toxic in the decades since The Chicks two-stepped out of country music\u2019s good graces and became an example for others \u2013 but perhaps not in the way their detractors were intending.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgiiyjam000w3d60f82bp7oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2018, Taylor Swift famously broke her political silence and endorsed Tennessee Democrats ahead of the midterm elections. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/01\/31\/entertainment\/miss-americana-review\">2020 Netflix documentary \u201cMiss Americana\u201d<\/a> showed<strong> <\/strong>a tearful Swift explaining her decision to her father, who was concerned about her safety and the potential for backlash.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgij58pb000z3d60vtkahsio@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cut to 2024, when Swift, in the midst of a record-breaking tour run, endorsed Kamala Harris in the presidential election. Days later, she was the target of one of now-President Donald Trump\u2019s Truth Social posts when he wrote simply, \u201cI hate Taylor Swift.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmgin6edh00153d60zngmsnr3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As anyone vaguely aware of music on this planet has seen, that sentiment has not adversely affected Swift\u2019s appeal or marketability in the time since,
