Elsbeth<\/em><\/a> star Carrie Preston<\/strong><\/a> and husband Michael Emerson<\/strong><\/a> have been going strong for over three decades, but their relationship was almost a non-starter.<\/p>\n

The couple met 31 years ago while costarring in a production of William Shakespeare<\/strong>\u2019s Hamlet<\/em> at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Preston, 58, recalled on the Tuesday, October 7, episode of the \u201cDinner\u2019s On Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson\u201d<\/a> podcast. However, despite finding him attractive, the actress admitted she initially thought Emerson, 71, was gay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got cast and, the first day of rehearsal, in walks this guy in a three-piece suit. I was like, \u2018Who the hell\u2019s that guy?\u2019\u201d Preston recalled. \u201cHe walked into rehearsal with the three-piece suit, and I was like, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s gay.\u2019 I was like, \u2018He\u2019s gay. Oh, no, OK, I have another crush on the gay guys,\u2019 because they\u2019re the coolest ones, and they\u2019re always well-dressed and so polite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018OK, damn it.\u2019 You know? \u2018All right, I\u2019ll just be friends with this guy,\u2019\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Preston said she inquired about the Lost<\/em><\/a> alum to her brother, actor John G. Preston<\/strong>, also part of the Hamlet <\/em>cast,\u00a0who set the record straight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Hey, you know, well what do you think about this Michael Emerson?\u2019\u201d she said, noting that her brother was \u201ctrying to hook me up with some other guy.\u201d She added, \u201cI was like, \u2018Well, what about Michael Emerson?\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, Emerson\u2019s cool.\u2019 I was like, \u2018But he\u2019s gay, right?\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018No.\u2019 He was like, \u2018He\u2019s so not.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After discovering that Emerson was straight, Preston said she \u201cstarted getting shy around him,\u201d however, it seems that he also had eyes for her. The Good Wife<\/em><\/a> actress noted that early on in their courtship, Emerson left flowers for her outside of her door and invited her to a party.<\/p>\n

Within a month of dating, the Emmy winner said she knew the Person of Interest<\/em> actor was the one for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, a month later, I was calling my mom, \u2018You need to come meet the man. I\u2019m gonna marry. I\u2019m not gonna tell him that. But you need to come meet the man,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Preston told Ferguson that she and Emerson just celebrated 27 years of marriage. They have been together for 31 years in total.<\/p>\n
