HBO has released the first teaser trailer for \u201cA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms\u201d as part of the show\u2019s panel and festivities at New York Comic-Con. The \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d spinoff is based on George R.R. Martin<\/a>\u2018s \u201cTales of Dunk and Egg<\/a>\u201d novel series, which is a kind of pocket universe within the larger \u201cThrones\u201d mythos.<\/p>\n If that sounds like a \u201cfor diehards only\u201d kind of adaptation, you wouldn\u2019t be wrong. And HBO is doing everything in this teaser trailer to emphasize the relatability and accessibility of this story. First off, they\u2019re telegraphing that the series, created by Ira Parker and Martin himself and starring Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, is as lore-free as possible.<\/p>\n More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n You don\u2019t need to catch up by reading \u201cFire & Blood\u201d or any of the main \u201cA Song of Ice and Fire\u201d books to \u201cget\u201d anything about this one. It\u2019s simply a character study, a relationship piece between the Dunk, a.k.a. Sir Duncan the Tall, and his squire Egg. It\u2019s a buddy comedy with a few dramatic notes that just happens to be set in Martin\u2019s medieval fantasy world. And fans of medieval fantasy worlds in general can see shades of the Arthurian legends here in the fact that Egg is secretly a prince.<\/p>\n There\u2019s also plenty of what \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d and \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d fans have come to expect of the series: stilted medieval dialogue, crude moments related to bodily functions (look at how that one guy hacks up a handful of spit), and liberal use of anachronistic profanity. When someone asks Dunk if he\u2019s Baelor Targaryen \u2014 a high role \u2014 and Dunk says no, the rude bastard says to him, \u201cThen would you get the fook out of the way?\u201d<\/p>\n Beyond that, though, there\u2019s a lot not shown here that one imagines would confuse newcomers, starting with the very concept of this show. It\u2019s set 100 years before \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d but about 100 years after \u201cHouse of the Dragon,\u201d right in the middle of both. It\u2019s a period of time that\u2019s totally been unexplored before now.<\/p>\n But that may be a lot to untangle for fans of \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d who expect that the Targaryen kings might have already fallen by this time (they haven\u2019t) or \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d fans who think that the conflict of that series \u2014\u00a0one Targaryen fighting another \u2014\u00a0is still going on. It isn\u2019t. In that regard, \u201cA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms\u201d kind of has the relationship of something like \u201cStar Wars: Rebels\u201d or \u201cThe Bad Batch\u201d to that saga\u2019s original and prequel trilogies.
