hacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/therealdrjackie\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Jackie Walters<\/a>, a seasoned OB\/GYN and cast member of Bravo\u2019s \u201cMarried to Medicine,\u201d is urging people to turn to their doctor \u2014 not their feed \u2014 for guidance on contraception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m seeing a trend among my younger patients, particularly Gen Z, of not using birth control because of misinformation they are seeing online,\u201d the 67-year-old reality TV star told The Post.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dr. Jackie Walters has been a practicing OB\/GYN since 1997 and is one of Bravo\u2019s longest-running reality TV stars. <span class=\"credit\">Brian Zak\/Page Six<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hormonal birth control \u2014 including pills, implants, injectables and IUDs \u2014 is backed by decades of research showing it\u2019s safe and highly effective at preventing pregnancy. <\/p>\n<p>But experts warn that social media is drowning young women with bogus claims, distorting how these medications work and exaggerating their potential risks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>There are known\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441576\/#:~:text=The%20potential%20disadvantages%20include%20side,blood%20clots%20forming%20(thrombosis).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side effects<\/a>\u00a0to hormonal birth control, including headaches, nausea, sore breasts and spotting. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bmcresnotes.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13104-019-4555-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies have also consistently<\/a> linked the Depo-Provera injection to weight gain, making it a notable exception among contraceptive methods.<\/p>\n<p>But in viral videos, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/health\/how-birth-control-is-discussed-on-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers have found<\/a> that influencers exaggerate the likelihood of these side effects and spread unfounded claims that contradict scientific consensus \u2014 including the false idea that these medications can <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@karentangmd\/video\/7218704473273879854?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change a woman\u2019s sexual preferences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Online misinformation about hormonal birth control is affecting the choices young information about the long-term health effects of hormonal birth control, with some even going as far as to call the pill \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/tiktok-misinformation-turns-women-away-from-contraceptive-pill-0pplqs20q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this generation\u2019s cigarettes<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>At the same time, many of these content creators are <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1521693424001330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushing \u201cnatural\u201d or hormone-free alternatives<\/a> to family planning, often overstating how effective they really are.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just online chatter \u2014 it\u2019s influencing <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38386797\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real-life decisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/contraceptive-experiences-coverage-and-preferences-findings-from-the-2024-kff-womens-health-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 survey<\/a> found 1 in 7 women aged 18 to 25 have either changed or considered changing their birth control method based on something they saw online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most common misconceptions that I personally hear in my practice is that using birth control will make it difficult to get pregnant later,\u201d Walters said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you stop using hormonal birth control, your body typically returns to its natural state,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contraceptionmedicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40834-018-0064-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies have found<\/a> that about 80% of women who try to conceive after stopping hormonal birth control become pregnant within a year \u2014 the same rate as the general population. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anecdotal reports suggest that some women have stopped taking the pill due to false claims they viewed online.  <span class=\"credit\">Gromik \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fears that hormonal contraception is \u201ctoxic\u201d or cancer-causing have also led many young women to avoid using the medication. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>While the pill may <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/breastcancernow.org\/about-breast-cancer\/awareness\/breast-cancer-risk-factors-and-causes\/the-pill-and-breast-cancer-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slightly increase the risk of breast cancer<\/a>, experts note that the overall risk remains very low in young women and declines after stopping use.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/the-pill-and-cancer-is-there-a-link.h00-159779601.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research suggests<\/a> that the pill may actually reduce the risk of other cancers \u2014 including bowel cancer, which has seen rates in young adults nearly double over the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so important for women to have accurate, trusted information so they can make informed decisions about their reproductive health,\u201d Walters said.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I speak with them, I give them the facts and explain that each method is different, so it\u2019s important to find what works best for them,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Without accurate information, doctors warn more women could face unintended pregnancies and other challenges \u2014 a growing concern as access to reproductive health services continues to shift across the US.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who do choose hormonal contraception, Walters said younger patients often opt for long-acting, reversible options like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"
