Angelina Jolie<\/strong><\/a> is looking back on her personal decision to undergo a double mastectomy<\/a> and ovary removal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did choose to have that [surgery] because I lost my mother and my grandmother very young,\u201d Jolie, 50, told Hello! <\/i><\/a>in a Tuesday, October 7, profile, referring to her relatives\u2019 respective cancer battles. \u201cI have the BRCA gene, so I chose to have a double mastectomy a decade ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes help produce proteins to help repair an individual\u2019s DNA, according to the NIH\u2019s National Cancer Institute<\/a>. Mutations of the genes are often linked to an increased risk of breast, ovarian and other types of cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve also had my ovaries removed, because that\u2019s what took my mother. Those are my choices<\/a>,\u201d Jolie told Hello!<\/i> on Tuesday. \u201cI don\u2019t say everybody should do it that way, but it\u2019s important to have the choice. I don\u2019t regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie\u2019s mother, Marcheline Bertrand<\/strong>, died in 2007 at the age of 56 after battling both breast and ovarian cancer. Bertrand\u2019s death subsequently inspired Jolie to undergo her preventive surgeries<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I knew that this was my reality. I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much [as] I could,\u201d Jolie wrote in a 2013 essay for The New York Times.<\/i> \u201cI made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work, but I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI can tell my children that they don\u2019t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer. It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that\u2019s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.\u201d<\/p>\n
