A would-be Assassin’s Creed<\/em> game<\/a> set in the Reconstruction era and focused<\/a> on a former slave was reportedly called off in 2024 after Ubisoft deemed it \u201ctoo political in a country too unstable,\u201d per a source quoted in a new piece<\/a> from Kotaku<\/em> and Axios<\/em> alum Stephen Totilo.<\/p>\n Writing for his Game File<\/em> newsletter, Totilo reported on Wednesday, Oct. 8, that news of the reported cancellation first started to circulate<\/a> among Ubisoft, the publisher behind the Assassin\u2019s Creed franchise, in July of last year. The allegedly scrapped game is described in the report as having focused on \u201ca Black man who had been formerly enslaved in the South, with the story taking place in the post-Civil War era of Reconstruction, i.e. the decade-plus period of U.S. history beginning in the mid-1860s.<\/p>\n The character, according to the report pulling from comments made by \u201ccurrent and former\u201d Ubisoft employees, would go on to be recruited by the Assassins, with the Ku Klux Klan at one point intersecting in the story.<\/p>\n As for the alleged reasoning behind the game\u2019s cancellation, Totilo\u2019s piece attributes that to both the response to Assassin\u2019s Creed Shadows<\/em> character Yasuke and the aforementioned \u201ctoo political in a county too unstable\u201d argument.
