Frank Zappa\u2019s famed and fiery Halloween 1978 residency at New York\u2019s Palladium will be the focus of an upcoming box set, the latest in a long series of live albums revolving around the guitarist\u2019s favorite holiday.<\/p>\n
Halloween 78, out Oct. 24 via Zappa Records\/UMe, will be released in a series of formats, including a 5-CD Super Deluxe Edition that features Zappa\u2019s entire October 31, 1978, performance as well as a bonus gig from earlier in the Palladium residency on October 27.<\/p>\n
More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n The box set is the fourth in the series of Zappa Records\u2019 trick-or-treat-related releases, following 2017\u2019s Halloween 77, 2019\u2019s Halloween 73, and 2020\u2019s Halloween 81. Like those previous sets, Halloween 78 comes complete with a Zappa-inspired monster mask, this time fashioned after the devil, complete with a red pitchfork.<\/p>\n \u201cFrank\u2019s relationship with his New York audience, a very special collection of what he called \u2018New York\u2019s Finest Crazy Persons,\u2019 is the stuff of legend,\u201d Zappa \u201cvaultmeister\u201d Joe Travers said of the release in a statement. \u201c1978 seemed the apex for the holiday event. FZ exclaimed, \u2018This is it! This is the BIG ONE\u2019 as he addressed the crowd in his opening monologue on Halloween night, and it surely was.\u201d<\/p>\n Taking place just a few months before Zappa\u2019s pivotal 1979 \u2014 a year that saw the rocker release Sheik Yerbouti and the Joe\u2019s Garage trilogy \u2014 the Palladium shows featured early takes on tracks from both LPs, including \u201cKeep It Greasy,\u201d \u201cWatermelon in Easter Hay,\u201d \u201cPackard Goose,\u201d \u201cBobby Brown Goes Down,\u201d and \u201cDancin\u2019 Fool.\u201d<\/p>\n Ahead of Halloween 78\u2019s release, Zappa Records and UMe have shared the performance of the guitar improvisation \u201cAncient\u00a0Armaments\u201d from the October 31 gig in its unedited form:<\/p>\n In addition to the 5CD set,\u00a0Halloween 78\u00a0will also be available as a 2-LP set \u2014 pressed on either\u00a0 \u201cCandy Corn\u201d or \u201cBlood Splatter\u201d color vinyl \u2014 featuring highlights from the Halloween shows.
