\n\tIn an unprecedented awards season move, indie studio IFC<\/a> has unleashed an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences \u2014 signed by none other than Indy, the breakout canine star of \u201cGood Boy<\/a>.\u201d The letter, humorous yet heartfelt, calls for the inclusion of animal actors in the Oscars\u2019 acting categories, arguing it\u2019s high time Hollywood gave its four-legged performers the recognition they deserve.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDespite my critically acclaimed role in the recent film \u2018Good Boy,\u2019 \u2014 I have been deemed ineligible for the Best Actor category,\u201d Indy laments in the letter obtained exclusively by Variety and distributed by IFC. \u201cApparently, I am not a good enough boy for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe campaign is backed by a box office high-mark for IFC. \u201cGood Boy\u201d opened to $2.2 million, marking IFC\u2019s second-best opening weekend ever, following 2024\u2019s \u201cLate Night with the Devil\u201d ($2.8 million). It also ranks as IFC Entertainment Group\u2019s third-largest opening weekend overall, behind this year\u2019s record-breaking release of \u201cClown in a Cornfield\u201d under the RLJE Films banner.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndy\u2019s letter references a long and storied tradition of animals delivering emotionally resonant work \u2014 Jed the wolf-dog in \u201cWhite Fang,\u201d the whale in \u201cFree Willy,\u201d and the titular pig in \u201cBabe\u201d (which was nominated for best picture), among others \u2014 without ever earning a place among the year\u2019s most celebrated performances.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow many great performances must go overlooked before the Academy throws us a bone?\u201d Indy asks. <\/p>\n

\n\tCritics agree that Indy\u2019s performance is award-worthy, with IndieWire calling him, \u201cOne of the most emotive actors of his generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe IFC campaign picked up momentum after the July launch of the film\u2019s trailer and poster, which went viral with over 100 million views across platforms \u2014 the largest reach in the company\u2019s history. Initially planned as a modest release, \u201cGood Boy\u2019s\u201d rollout was expanded to a nationwide theatrical debut, giving it IFC\u2019s second-largest opening weekend theater count ever.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndy, in the closing lines of the letter, delivers a poignant message to the Academy: \u201cWe ask that you stop lifting your leg on the contribution of myself and the many great animal actors whose work continues to go unrecognized.\u201d<\/p>\n
