The Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn<\/a><\/strong> has always had a deep connection with folk music legend Bob Dylan<\/a><\/strong>. A longtime admirer of Dylan, McGuinn incorporated the famed musician\u2019s work into The Byrds’ repertoire, and the band\u2019s first single was a cover of Dylan\u2019s “Mr. Tambourine Man.”<\/a> Not only did the cover launch The Byrds\u2019 career, but it also became a number-one hit and helped propel Dylan into mainstream fame.<\/p>\n McGuinn and Dylan have a longstanding mutual respect for one another\u2019s talents and would go on to collaborate and appear together multiple times, including during Dylan\u2019s 1975\u201376 Rolling Thunder Revue<\/a>.<\/em> Having collaborated with and admired Dylan for over 60 years, McGuinn developed a close \u2014 though occasionally complex \u2014 friendship with the “Blowin\u2019 in the Wind” singer.<\/p>\n In a new interview with Guitar Player<\/a><\/em>, McGuinn sheds light on his unique friendship with Dylan, even comparing him to an iconic sitcom character.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019ve ever seen The Big Bang Theory<\/em>, Bob is like Sheldon. [laughs] It\u2019s like\u2026 he\u2019s out there. He thinks in abstractions. And social graces are different. He doesn\u2019t really have a conversation with you; he talks in abstractions a lot. I love the guy like a brother. But\u2026 he\u2019s a little\u2026 challenging to have a friendship with.\u201d<\/p>\n McGuinn went on to describe Dylan as \u201chot and cold,\u201d stating:<\/p>\n \u201cSo he likes me at times. [laughs] He goes hot and cold. He liked me when we were hanging out together in Malibu. He liked me on the Rolling Thunder tour. He liked me when I did the 30th anniversary thing at Madison Square Garden with him. He was happy about my performance at that. I remember he told Tom Petty and George Harrison, \u2018Wow, Roger really stole the show!\u2019 He was very positive about that.\u201d<\/p>\n Dylan and McGuinn\u2019s friendship has endured the test of time. Based in mutual respect, The Byrds’ singer has called Dylan a \u201cgenius\u201d<\/a> and an important figure in his career. In turn, Dylan has acknowledged the importance of The Byrds in introducing his music to a broader, more mainstream audience.<\/p>\n \u201cBob has never written a bad song,\u201d McGuinn once said. \u201cBob Dylan is a genius.\u201d<\/p>\n Bob Dylan is widely considered a lyrical genius, so it makes perfect sense that his longtime friend would compare him to TV\u2019s Sheldon Cooper, whose 187 IQ puts him well above genius level.
