AUSTIN (KXAN<\/a>) \u2014 Texas alternative country artist Charley Crockett has never been one to swim with the tide. The self-proclaimed drifter reminded his fans of that once again on social media this week.<\/p>\n Crockett, a native Texan from San Benito who\u2019s famous for his signature Americana music, took to social media this week, reminding folks of his roots and sharing his thoughts on the name change from \u201cThe Gulf of Mexico\u201d to the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI was born on the Gulf Of Mexico. I don\u2019t recognize it by any other name,\u201d the post stated<\/a>. \u201cAny real Texan knows that our Mexican American brothers and sisters hold up our economy in every industry. I\u2019m proud to have been born in the Rio Grande Valley where the population is over 90 percent Latino.\u201d<\/p>\n Crockett, of course, was referencing President Trump\u2019s executive order<\/a> to change the Gulf of Mexico\u2019s name to the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d That order prompted countless conversations and debates over whether Trump should or even could rename the body of water.<\/p>\n Crockett\u2019s post concluded, \u201cIf those boys in Washington D.C. wanna go renaming regions of this country, they can start with New England. Because it ain\u2019t new and it ain\u2019t England.\u201d<\/p>\n This is far from the first time the singer has weighed in on contentious topics online.<\/p>\n In August, Crockett wrote a lengthy caption<\/a> in a social media post about the backlash<\/a> fellow Texas artist Beyonc\u00e9 received earlier this year for dipping into the country music genre with her album \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d and winning prestigious country music awards for it.<\/p>\n \u201cHey country folks. @beyonce ain\u2019t the source of your discontent. It was 25 years of bro country,\u201d Crockett said at the beginning of the post. Later in the caption, he wrote, \u201cI don\u2019t need to put down a black woman to advance my music. That\u2019s just embarrassing to the idea of America and I got no respect for it.\u201d<\/p>\n This past spring, Crockett joined a conversation<\/a> with up-and-coming country artist Noeline Hofmann at Rolling Stone\u2019s first multi-city tour of its\u00a0\u201cMusicians on Musicians\u201d series<\/a>. During the discussion, he talked about his upbringing in Texas, his world travels, and how a common theme in his lyrics is change and being able to roll with it.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, you can\u2019t be neutral on a moving train.
