Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/strong><\/a> shared an emotional birthday message to her late Buffy the Vampire Slayer <\/i>sister, Michelle Trachtenberg<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you turned 16, it was hard not to still see you as the little girl I met on All My Children<\/i>. When you turned 21, I had to teach myself to not see you as the little sister anymore,\u201d Gellar, 48, wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Saturday, October 11, alongside throwback Buffy <\/i>footage of the two actresses. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine what 40 would have been like.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cThis I know\u2026 it would be filled with love. Happy birthday @michelletrachtenberg.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gellar set her post to Charlie Puth<\/strong> and Wiz Khalifa<\/strong>\u2019s equally emotional duet, \u201cSee You Again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gellar and Trachtenberg first met when they both starred on All My Children <\/i>in the early 1990s. Years later, they reunited on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. <\/i><\/a>Gellar starred as the titular Buffy, while Trachtenberg portrayed Buffy\u2019s younger sister and a magical key, Dawn.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly <\/i>confirmed in February that Trachtenberg died at the age of 39<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,\u201d a rep for the Gossip Girl <\/i>alum told Us <\/i>in a statement at the time. \u201cThe family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trachtenberg is survived by her parents, her sister and her boyfriend, talent agent Jay Cohen<\/strong>. Her cause of death was later ruled as a result of complications of diabetes mellitus.<\/p>\n

Shortly after news broke of Trachtenberg\u2019s death, Gellar was among the stars to share her condolences.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you,\u2019\u201d Gellar wrote via Instagram<\/a> that month, quoting one of Buffy\u2019s lines before sharing what Trachtenberg had said in the musical episode. \u201cThe hardest thing in this world is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live\u2026 for you.\u2019 \ud83d\udc94\ud83d\udc94\ud83d\udc94\ud83d\udddd\ufe0f<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just weeks before Trachtenberg\u2019s death, Gellar had confirmed her involvement in a new Buffy <\/i>reboot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly emotionally overwhelming,\u201d Gellar later told Us Weekly <\/i>exclusively<\/a> in August of returning to her teenage role. \u201cIt\u2019s just a place I didn\u2019t know that I would find myself. While it was new, it was also incredibly familiar, and I feel very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

While few details about the new Buffy <\/i>have been revealed, a logline has described the project as the \u201cnext chapter in the Buffyverse\u201d starring a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong<\/strong>. Gellar, for her part, is set to serve as an executive producer and will have a recurring onscreen role.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can say is the same thing I keep telling everyone: we are doing it slowly and carefully because there\u2019s no point in doing it unless we can do it right,\u201d she told Us. <\/i>\u201cSo we\u2019re going to make sure that everything is in place before it\u2019s something that we\u2019re ready to share.\u201d<\/p>\n
