This week, Drake\u2019s (n\u00e9 Aubrey Graham) defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) was dismissed by a federal judge<\/a> who ruled that Kendrick Lamar\u2019s diss track, \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d was only a matter of opinion, not fact.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough the accusation that Plaintiff is a pedophile is certainly a serious one, the broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that \u2018Not Like Us\u2019 imparts verifiable facts about Plaintiff,\u201d Judge Jeannette A. Vargas wrote in her ruling.<\/p>\n

The feud between Drake and Lamar has spanned over a decade but began dominating headlines in the spring of 2024, as the pair both released a series of incendiary tracks. In May 2024, Drake released \u201cFamily Matters<\/a>,\u201d which accused Lamar of domestic violence and his collaborator, Dave Free, of fathering Lamar\u2019s son. Twenty minutes later, Lamar released his response\u2014a song called \u201cMeet the Grahams<\/a>\u201d in which Lamar alleged Drake was not only a liar, but a sexual predator and trafficker. Then, two days later, Lamar doubled down with the now infamous \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d which accused Drake of being a pedophile. The song, as we all well know, became the petty anthem of the century, earned Lamar multiple Grammys, and landed him the 2024 halftime show\u2014the most-viewed halftime show of all time<\/a> with over 133 million people across all viewing platforms.<\/p>\n

Eight months after the track was released, Drake filed a\u00a0defamation lawsuit against UMG<\/a>. In the suit, Drake claimed Lamar \u201cassassinated\u201d his character. The self-proclaimed \u201ccertified lover boy\u201d further asserted that the Super Bowl performance (and Lamar\u2019s Grammy wins) \u201cintroduced new listeners to the recording,\u201d which \u201cduped\u201d a wider audience \u201cinto believing that Drake was a pedophile.\u201d Never mind that Drake\u2019s dubious behavior toward young women has been well-documented<\/a> for years\u2026<\/p>\n

UMG, which represents both Drake and Lamar, swiftly denied Drake\u2019s allegations and issued a statement that read: \u201cDrake, unquestionably one of the world\u2019s most accomplished artists and with whom we\u2019ve enjoyed a 16-year successful relationship, is being misled by his legal representatives into taking one absurd legal step after another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Obviously, Vargas agreed. But, of course, Drake\u2019s legal team has already indicated their plans to appeal the ruling in a statement: \u201cWe intend to appeal today\u2019s ruling, and we look forward to the Court of Appeals reviewing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After this ruling, not only do I hope this back-and-forth never ends, but that more artists take the opportunity to call those in the industry who deserve it pedophiles, weirdos, and losers. In the words of Bethenny Frankel: \u201cMention it all!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n
