Bette Midler paid tribute to her friend and The First Wives Club <\/em>co-star Diane Keaton. The actress died on Saturday<\/a> at the age of 79.<\/p>\n \u201cThe brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me,\u201d Midler wrote in an Instagram post, which included a black-and-white photo of Keaton. \u201cShe was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n She added: \u201cWhat you saw was who she was\u2026oh, la, lala!\u201d<\/p>\n Midler and Keaton starred along with Goldie Hawn in 1996\u2019s The First Wives Club<\/em>, with the stars portraying divorc\u00e9es who wonderfully, wickedly take revenge on their terrible former spouses. Peter Travers called Keaton and her costars \u201ca comedy dream team\u201d in Rolling Stone\u2019s <\/a><\/em>review<\/a> of the film.<\/p>\n When the three actresses were awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award in June 1997 for their performances in the film, Midler referred to Keaton as a \u201cdear friend,\u201d as Reuters <\/a><\/em>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIn my heart of hearts I suspect this award is not for our work in The First Wives Club<\/em> because it is so brilliant,\u201d Midler said while accepting the award, \u201cbut rather because everybody was so overjoyed that three actresses of a certain age still have what it takes to deliver a 100-million-dollar-picture just like the testosterone tyrants.\u201d<\/p>\n The co-stars had discussed a sequel to their hit film, but it was not to be. \u201cI used to lobby for First Wives Club 2,<\/em> but there were political reasons they didn\u2019t want to do that again. And it always broke my heart,\u201d Midler told\u00a0People<\/a><\/em> in 2022. \u201cI really felt that it was a pretty serious diss, because when women have hits, it\u2019s a fluke. But when men have hits, isn\u2019t it great? At least that\u2019s what they told us on First Wives<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Hawn had previously told AARP Magazine <\/em>(via IndieWire<\/a>) in 2009 that Paramount Pictures planned to pay the actresses the same salary for a sequel that they received for the original film, despite its resounding success.<\/p>\n \u201cDiane [Keaton] called me and said, \u2018We\u2019ve got to do this,\u2019\u201d Hawn said at the time. \u201cI got a call from the head of the studio, who said, \u2018Let\u2019s try to make it work. But I think we should all do it for the same amount of money.\u2019 Now, if there were three men that came back to do a sequel, they would have paid them three times their salary at least.\u201d<\/p>\n Midler, Keaton, and Hawn were also expected to reunite for a comedy called Family Jewels<\/em>, as Variety reported<\/a><\/em> in 2020.
