Her The Life of a Showgirl <\/em>era has already sparked headlines from every angle \u2014 from Adele\u2019s rumored irritation<\/a> over record-breaking sales to some fans calling her 34 album variants \u201cexhausting\u201d<\/a> and \u201cmoney-grubbing\u201d while others are fully embracing the record-breaking album\u2019s<\/a> opulent vibe.<\/p>\n Now, a single T-shirt that popped up on Saturday Night Live<\/em> last night has become a central point in one of the \u201cCancelled!\u201d singer\u2019s alleged feuds.<\/p>\n More from SheKnows<\/strong><\/p>\n During the Oct. 11 episode, Charli XCX made a surprise appearance<\/a> as part of musical guest Role Model\u2019s performance, wearing a T-shirt that read \u201cMax\u2019s Kansas City.\u201d Within minutes, social media had decided the shirt was a dig at Swift \u2014 a nod, supposedly, to Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and Swift fianc\u00e9) Travis Kelce.<\/p>\n But before anyone crowns this as the start of a new feud or another Easter egg in Swift\u2019s orbit<\/a>, it\u2019s worth noting the obvious: not everything that happens on live TV is a coded message. In fact, there are a lot of non-Swift related reasons the \u201cVon Dutch\u201d singer could have opted for the shirt.<\/p>\n Some eagled-eyed SNL <\/em>fans were quick to note that Role Model had already been photographed wearing the same shirt during the show\u2019s promos<\/a> earlier in the week, suggesting Charli probably just borrowed it. Still, the timing was messy: Swift\u2019s Showgirl <\/em>lyrics are already under a microscope, and her fans love a pattern.<\/p>\n The speculation traces back to \u201cActually Romantic,\u201d a track many listeners believe takes aim at Charli\u2019s 2024 song \u201cSympathy Is a Knife.\u201d Charli\u2019s song includes the line, \u201cDon\u2019t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend\u2019s show,\u201d which fans connected to her now-husband George Daniel, drummer for The 1975 \u2014 and by extension, Swift\u2019s brief connection to frontman Matty Healy<\/a>. Swift\u2019s song, meanwhile, fires back with: \u201cI heard you call me \u2018Boring Barbie\u2019 when the coke\u2019s got you brave \/ high-fived my ex and said you\u2019re glad he ghosted me.\u201d<\/p>\n For her part, Charli has denied any feud, or at least denied starting one. \u201cThere are no diss tracks on the album,\u201d Charli XCX told New York Magazine<\/em> when Brat<\/em> came out last year. \u201cPeople are going to think what they want to think. That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don\u2019t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n Swift, at her Release Party of The Life of a Showgirl,<\/em> described \u201cActually Romantic\u201d as a \u201clove letter to someone who hates you,\u201d saying it\u2019s \u201cabout realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn\u2019t know about. And all of a sudden they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you\u2019ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n She added: \u201cThere can be this moment where it\u2019s unveiled to you, through things that they do that are very overt. And, as I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve just started to be like, \u2018Oh my God, you did so much with this. It\u2019s flattering.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat is, wow, that is very, very sweet of you to think about me this much, even if it\u2019s negative. In my industry, attention is affection, and you\u2019ve given me a whole lot of it.\u201d<\/p>\n And yet, that Max\u2019s Kansas City shirt carries its own history: the legendary New York club where the Velvet Underground recorded a live album, and a space Charli has publicly called a creative touchstone. She\u2019s even teased wanting to make a \u201cLou Reed-era\u201d record<\/a> with Clairo after her Brat <\/em>era.<\/p>\n Could the shirt have had multiple meanings \u2014 or even been a subtle callout? Sure. Is that what actually happened? Who knows. But did the internet find a way to make it about Taylor Swift?
