These plot developments made it seem like a no-brainer that Tilly would be a major part of the <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/star-trek-starfleet-academy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Starfleet Academy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Starfleet Academy<\/a><\/em>, but Wiseman always demurred when asked questions about whether she would be in the show or not. Admittedly, her absence may make it easier for this show to establish its own roster of characters, including Holly Hunter\u2019s Starfleet captain. Still, Paramount didn\u2019t blink an eye at bringing in Robert Picardo\u2019s character from <em>Voyager<\/em> and even Tig Notaro\u2019s character from <em>Discovery<\/em>; why, then, not bring back Wiseman\u2019s <em>Discovery<\/em> character, especially when that show spent so much time setting up her arc as a Starfleet Academy instructor?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To me, this weird decision is the latest indication that Paramount doesn\u2019t know what it\u2019s doing with Star Trek. They want <em>Starfleet Academy<\/em> to be a <em>Discovery<\/em> spinoff in order to appeal to that show\u2019s fan base, but they also want to distance the new show from the earlier one in order to placate those who hate <em>Discovery<\/em>. And given that their last Trek film (the direct-to-TV Section 31) is the lowest-rated and most-hated movie in franchise history, I\u2019m starting to worry that they don\u2019t even know how to make a decent Star Trek movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mary Wiseman is a great actor, and her Tilly character was one of the best parts of <em>Discovery<\/em>. Setting her up as an instructor and then keeping her almost entirely out of Starfleet Academy is proof that there\u2019s no real long-term planning happening at Paramount, which is bad news for anyone hoping that the NuTrek era is going to get better.
