Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/a>\u2019s father is recounting the time he told his son not to perform a song from Hamilton<\/a> at the White House.<\/p>\n

Luis A. Miranda Jr.<\/a> recently told People magazine that he initially encouraged the Tony winner to perform something \u201cwe know works,\u201d specifically a song from his Broadway musical In<\/a> the Heights, at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word in 2009.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was invited to the White House. He was asked to sing something from In the Heights<\/a>, and he told me, \u2018Dad, you know that I\u2019ve been working on Hamilton. Do you think that I could play the only song I have?’\u201d Luis recalled Lin-Manuel asking him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018No. No, why don\u2019t you go with what we know works, which is In the Heights<\/a>,’\u201d he continued, noting that his son ultimately went against his advice, but that the gamble clearly paid off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
