Keaton was a legend amongst performers, starring in iconic films like Annie Hall, The Godfather and Something\u2019s Gotta Give over the course of her illustrious career. Since news of the Oscar winner\u2019s death broke, legions of fans have been paying tribute to her as have fellow actors. Reese Witherspoon also memorialized Keaton, as she shared a sweet story about working with her years ago, and other stars had lovely responses.<\/p>\n Before Witherspoon became the A-list actress and powerful producer she is today, she was a young actress hoping to break into the entertainment industry. Witherspoon reflected on that time in her career during a sweet moment at the Hello Sunshine Shine Away conference this weekend. Amid the event, Witherspoon acknowledged Keaton\u2019s death with attendees and reflected on how one of her earliest auditions was for the late actress:<\/p>\n Diane was really important, she was one of my first mentors in this business. I was 15 years old, and I was from Nashville, Tennessee, and I didn\u2019t know anybody. And I came in \u2013 it was my second, maybe my third movie audition ever, and I auditioned for her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The thought of auditioning for a massive star like Diane Keaton seems intimidating enough, but I can\u2019t even imagine doing it as a teenager. It goes without saying that Reese Witherspoon found herself in a prime position to make an impression at that point in her career. As Witherspoon went on to explain (as can be seen on Instagram<\/a>), she did manage to make an impression when she finally had the opportunity to speak with Keaton personally. What ultimately played out was a funny exchange between the two actresses:<\/p>\n She looked at me after, and I came over with this big country accent, and I was playing this little southern girl. And she goes, \u2018Who are you?\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m Reese Witherspoon, I\u2019m from Nashville, Tennessee.\u2019 She said, \u2018Are you making that up, that accent you\u2019re doing?\u2019 I said, \u2018No ma\u2019am, I\u2019m from Nashville, Tennessee. And I\u2019m here, and I\u2019d love to be in your movie. [She said,] \u2018Well, you\u2019re hired. You\u2019re hired today, tomorrow and the next day. I don\u2019t know who you are, but I am so excited to have you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n That was pure charm and kindness coming from the First Wives Club icon, and I love how, in that moment, she only encouraged Witherspoon as opposed to discouraging her. Still, I love the notion of Keaton \u2013 a California native \u2013 being humorously thrown off by Witherspoon\u2019s Nashville-bred<\/a> accent. Those cultural differences didn\u2019t stop the two stars from becoming close when they filmed Keaton\u2019s Wildflower, though. Witherspoon explained just how important Keaton\u2019s guidance was:<\/p>\n I went, and I made this movie, and she directed the movie, and it was called Wildflower, and I did it with Patricia Arquette and Diane Keaton, and it was one of the most important summers of my childhood. Because [Diane] really took the time to pull me aside and say, \u2018Stand up straight, OK? I want you to have good posture. If you\u2019re going to be an actress, you gotta work on your posture, OK?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Yes, Ms. Keaton.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Considering that Reese Witherspoon went on to headline great movies<\/a> and even win an Oscar<\/a>, I\u2019d like to think she soaked up quite a bit of the knowledge imparted to her by Diane Keaton. I really appreciate how Witherspoon also pays respect to those who\u2019ve inspired her, as she also recently did when Jane Goodall died<\/a>. When it came to her Keaton tribute, Witherspoon lovingly finished it off by suggesting fans watch one of the late star\u2019s movies and wear an eclectic ensemble in her honor.<\/p>\n Witherspoon\u2019s sweet recollection of Keaton has since gone viral, so it\u2019s probably not all that surprising that other stars have since reacted to her IG post.
