Forty years ago today, Hulk Hogan\u2019s iconic entrance theme \u201cReal American\u201d debuted on WWE TV \u2014 just not for the Hulkster.<\/p>\n

In the fall of 1985, WWE released its first full musical album, The Wrestling Album<\/em>, featuring songs performed by WWE Superstars. Highlights included a rare face-and-heel collab \u201cLand of a Thousand Dances<\/a>\u201d and Junkyard Dog\u2019s funky \u201cGrab Them Cakes<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the standout track was \u201cReal American,\u201d originally written for former tag champs Barry Windham and Mike Rotunda \u2014 the U.S. Express. However, after Windham left the company, WWE was left with a great theme simply collecting dust.<\/p>\n

By the end of the year, it found a new home with Hulk Hogan, replacing his previous theme, Survivor\u2019s \u201cEye of the Tiger<\/a>\u201d from the movie Rocky III<\/em>, which featured Hogan.<\/p>\n

For trivia buffs, Hogan first used the song ahead of a match against arguably his greatest rival, \u201cMacho Man\u201d Randy Savage, at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 30, 1985.<\/p>\n

As WWE phased out licensed tracks in favor of original in-house themes, \u201cReal American\u201d rose to legendary status \u2014 the benchmark for all entrance music, even in 2025.<\/p>\n

In a bittersweet twist, both Rick Derringer, who performed the song, and Hogan passed away earlier this year. Yet \u201cReal American\u201d endures \u2014 the eternal soundtrack of WWE\u2019s golden era<\/a>.<\/p>\n
