From early on in the process of filming Brad Ingelsby\u2019s\u00a0\u201cTask,\u201d Tom Pelphrey understood the motivations and desires of his character, Robbie Prendergrast, a single dad and trash collector moonlighting as a thief.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s so well defined in the sense that his North Star is so clear: his family and taking care of his children,\u201d Pelphrey told TheWrap, applauding Ingelsby\u2019s dedication to the character study. \u201cThe reason why a character does anything is paramount to him, and oftentimes, once you try and fit that into a tight genre, which \u2018Task\u2019 kind of is, you start sacrificing some of those character things. But Brad refuses \u2026 he\u2019ll never sacrifice the character for the plot.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Robbie\u2019s commitment to his family that lands him at the center of an FBI investigation, led by Mark Ruffalo\u2019s Tom Brandis and his ragtag task force, who work tirelessly to find Sam, the little boy kidnapped by Robbie during a raid-gone-wrong. But Pelphrey doesn\u2019t classify taking Sam as kidnapping, given his other options, saying \u201cas an actor \u2026 you become the deepest advocate of your character \u2026 If you\u2019re judging, you\u2019re not doing your job right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Brad does brilliantly in this show in particular is present a series of impossible situations where there\u2019s really no good choice for anyone involved, and then they have to make a choice that they believe is at least a little bit better than the other bad choice,\u201d Pelphrey said. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of choices that Robbie\u2019s making where I\u2019m like, \u2018what would the better choice have looked like?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Through most of \u201cTask,\u201d Robbie and Tom operate as dueling protagonists, with Robbie just out of reach from Tom\u2019s FBI task force until they finally cross paths in Episode 5, when Tom shows up at Robbie\u2019s front door. Robbie quickly realizes Tom\u2019s motives and subsequently holds him at gunpoint as he forces him to drive him nearby his rendezvous point for his drug deal, but, despite Tom expecting to die there and then, Robbie lets him go nearby a local beach full of people.<\/p>\n

Despite this shortcomings, it\u2019s these moments where Robbie\u2019s unwavering values come through that give him redemption for Pelphrey.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a very clear value system that he\u2019s following no matter what he\u2019s doing and however crazy it might be or however violent things might be, he\u2019s only doing what he needs to do in his mind to provide for his children,\u201d Pelphrey said. \u201cHe\u2019s not interested in any unnecessary suffering. He doesn\u2019t want anybody to be hurt or killed \u2026 it\u2019s admirable the discipline of that and and he follows that through to the end, because that\u2019s at the core of who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n
