You get to see a bunch of actors in a completely different light.”

One of those actors he’s alluding to is Mark Ruffalo, who blends Bruce Banner and Columbo together to play a depressed yet determined FBI agent named Tom Brandis. He’s called back into the field with a rookie task force to stop a string of armed robberies terrorizing the Greater Philadelphia Area. Frankel plays Detective Anthony Grasso, a member of Ruffalo’s new crew. Grasso wields a heavy South Philly Italian accent and a background as a DJ for church-approved functions. (His stage name? DJ Grassonova.) Frankel is an incredibly charming addition to a limited series that can turn gloomy as all hell, and—as it’s revealed in episode 5—he’s also a mole who is leaking information to the show’s primary antagonists.

Grasso is yet another Frankel-played character who is behind a major betrayal, following House of the Dragon turncoat Ser Criston Cole. But where Cole’s motivations felt rash and polarizing to the rabid fan base that flooded Frankel’s feeds with hate mail last year, Grasso’s story in Task is stronger material to chew on.

“It never felt like it was ironed out on House of Dragon in the right way,” he says. “There were moments in season 2 [of House of the Dragon] where you got to see more of that three-dimensionality [from Cole], and there will be more in season 3. And I felt so lucky that Grasso is such a three-dimensional character.”

In one of Task’s most memorable scenes, Tom confronts Anthony and gives him a chance to come clean—over a couple Yuenglings, of course. Instead, Anthony and his boss have an honest conversation about faith, confession, and whether our sins can ever truly be forgiven. “That’s the thing between believing something and proving it,” Anthony responds. “A million miles lie.”

Ingelsby wrote and added the scene to the script just two months into filming, according to Frankel. “Brad was like, I think we need a scene where Tom really makes Grasso come to the realization of what he’s done, and that was it,” the actor tells me. “He wrote it and it was like six and a half pages. I watched it with a friend of mine, and she was like, “It’s so you, that scene.” It felt like such an insult, and I know she didn’t mean it in that way, but I was like, Oh my God. I felt really insecure about that scene, so that’s nice.

I figured that you must have appreciated it, since you were talking last time we spoke about how much of a different challenge Ser Criston Cole [from House of the Dragon] is since he arrives with no backstory.

Yeah, it did. And [Ingelsby] does that so well with everyone. So hard to do, I imagine, as a writer. It’s like he writes everything fully formed. And Criston … this, it is what it is, but Criston is a purpose in a storyline, and House of Dragon is a show that is a bunch of people who are serving a story. At times, I find that that’s difficult as an actor.

Especially, too, when you’re a character who betrays the audience. You faced, really, the height of social-media anger during that second season.

Oh yeah, dude, that was a whole moment. It was weird. And it’s funny, I feel like people’s opinions about the character, suddenly there was more empathy, if that makes sense. It wasn’t empathy for him; it was empathy for me, like, Oh, we don’t want this guy to feel like it’s his fault.

When I saw one of your characters betray someone again in Task, I was just like, “Oh no, not again.”

Dude, brother, what the fuck, right? The nice thing about it is that, eventually, you understand the reason why. But it’s like, people fuck up, and that’s what makes acting these types of characters who fuck up so interesting.

The scene in episode 6 where Tom confronts Grasso is so intense. What’s Ruffalo like as a scene partner?

He’s the fucking best, man. He’s so wise. There’s people who spend hours trying to explain stuff to you. And then there’s people you just watch. You learn by osmosis. As a person on set, the way he speaks to everyone, he knows everyone’s name and he’s friends with everyone. You can stop him and have a conversation with him, and he won’t tell you that he doesn’t have time to speak to you no matter who you are. When you’re at that level of success, I can imagine you can become jaded. Mark is so far away from that.

And that scene … it’s great, man. It’s fitting. Tom’s not the one who needs to make him feel guilty. He’s already got the guilt as it is. And Grasso’s a very self-aware character.
