He was originally written as a woman, and the network suggested that there\u2019s maybe too many women. I mean, if you can imagine the craziness of that statement. And so, it was made into a man,\u201d Patterson, 67, told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson in \u201cGilmore Girls.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/courtesy Everett Co<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scott Patterson as Luke on \u201cGilmore Girls.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/courtesy Everett Co<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Patterson was reflecting on the show<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/10\/entertainment\/gilmore-girls-doc-directors-on-cast-interviews-surprising\/\"> for its 25th anniversary<\/a>, as it originally premiered in October of 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The beloved family drama aired from 2000 to 2007 on The WB (which then became the CW) before it briefly returned for a<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/30\/entertainment\/this-major-a-lister-blew-his-gilmore-girls-audition-doc\/\"> 2016 Netflix revival, \u201cGilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGilmore Girls\u201d was set in the fictional quaint town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, and followed former teen mom Lorelai (Lauren Graham) as she raised her precocious teen daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supporting characters included <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/17\/entertainment\/kelly-bishop-shades-gilmore-girls-for-sleepy-season-7-rarely-hung-out-with-alexis-bledel\/\">Lorelai\u2019s difficult mother, Emily (Bishop)<\/a>, Luke\u2019s nephew Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), Rory\u2019s first boyfriend, Dean (Jared Padalecki), local town weirdo Kirk (Sean Gunn), and Lorelai\u2019s best friend, Sookie (Melissa McCarthy).<\/p>\n<p>Luke was Loreai\u2019s grumpy, diner-owning love interest, who perpetually wore flannel and a backwards baseball hat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scott Patterson in his video interview with the celebrity.land.  <span class=\"credit\">The celebrity.land<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption> Scott Patterson and Lauren Graham in \u201cGilmore Girls.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/courtesy Everett Co<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After many seasons of \u201cwill they or won\u2019t they,\u201d Luke and Lorelai eventually ended up together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Patterson, who also has the \u201cGilmore Girls\u201d rewatch iHeartRadio podcast,\u00a0 \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1119-i-am-all-in-with-scott-pa-81509112\/__;!!F0Stn7g!Ez6-7lPTdvYhxey-V5KHTgIg7IUSxGan_RX0syCNSByQkFgHNzFIp-0Bz5XbONGGjvUqUPS4LAvG-ur6SdI$\">I Am All In\u2026Again!<\/a>\u201d said, \u201cThey\u2019re forever. I mean, they\u2019ll never change. They\u2019re rock solid.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He added that Luke and Lorelai are, \u201ctwo people who are wildly independent. They don\u2019t need each other to get through life, but want to be with each other. That\u2019s powerful. I think they are teenage flings and necessary teenage romances to deepen her heart. I think she needs to get her act together,\u201d said Patterson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that Rory is a mother now, following the events of \u201cA Year in the Life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I\u2019m doing the math correctly, she\u2019s got a nine year old\u2026And please forgive me. I\u2019m not a television scriptwriter \u2013 but maybe there\u2019s a world where there\u2019s a new energy introduced into her life, and somebody [new] that really captures her attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But regarding whether Rory should be with Jess, Dean, or Logan, he said, \u201cI think these three guys had their shot. They blew it. Then I stopped doing it. I think you\u2019ll hear that refrain from a lot of actors. And being there so much, I didn\u2019t want to watch it after I just spent 14 hours doing it,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, once he started watching \u201cGilmore Girls,\u201d he said \u201cI fell in love with it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s two decades in between me and the repulsion that I feel when I watch myself. So, I didn\u2019t really feel it anymore. We knew it was a unique and beautifully written show\u2026we knew we had something special. We were all shocked to be in something of such quality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said that creator Amy Sherman Palladino and her husband Dan were the reason why the show \u201cendures.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had showrunners and we had a pair of creators who protected the show and crafted what they wanted to craft. It\u2019s just a rare thing in the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patterson added that while streaming on Netflix today, the show is \u201cmore popular than it ever was during its original run. It is a unique phenomenon in the history of television.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He referred to the show as, \u201cthe proverbial little engine that could. Just a small show from a small network. It\u2019s hard to get to 100 episodes\u2026.it\u2019s an impossible business to be in. And all of us, together with these genius creators, defied the odds as a group and made something for the world that they continue to consume at a high rate.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Patterson, who currently co-stars in the CW show \u201cSullivan\u2019s Crossing,\u201d added that, \u201cyou could even go so far as saying that [\u2018Gilmore Girls\u2019] has had some kind of therapeutic effect on the population that is exposed to this, either directly or indirectly.
