For Wye Oak frontwoman, Bon Iver touring guitarist, and indie producer Jenn Wasner, living in the 2020s is about facing the negative cycles forced upon us by modern life.<\/p>\n

On her new album, The Life You Save \u2013 released under her solo moniker Flock of Dimes \u2013 Wasner asks: What does it take to stop repeating those same cycles? Her musical answer makes for possibly the most emotionally resonant record of her career.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s about codependency and generational trauma,\u201d she says. \u201cFor years I thought I was the one who got away; that I\u2019d escaped. The turning point was admitting that I\u2019m still inside it after all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone who\u2019s been surrounded by addiction will identify with the themes of her latest songs. Wasner is clear: addiction isn\u2019t just the addict\u2019s story. It\u2019s the story of everyone around them too \u2013 caretakers, fixers, and those who pretend they\u2019ve moved on but secretly nurse the same old wounds.<\/p>\n

She explores the issues of growing up in a family who didn\u2019t have the language to talk about trauma, learning to \u201cfix\u201d situations by overachieving, and entering adulthood with the belief that it\u2019s all about optimizing every aspect of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy role was to see myself as outside of it,\u201d she says. \u201cTo believe I\u2019d escaped and maybe come back as some kind of rescuer. But that\u2019s pride talking; that\u2019s ego. The truth is I was still in it. Still repeating it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The concept is carried beyond her lyrics in an intimate acoustic manner. As fingers scrape strings, a raw vocal performance gives every word weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted it to feel aggressively human,\u201d she explains. \u201cI didn\u2019t want a record that pushed anyone out. I wanted something people could sit inside, even if the feelings were uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wasner\u2019s return to acoustic guitar<\/a> was a matter of timing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger I avoided acoustic because of the \u2018female singer-songwriter\u2019 trope,\u201d she explains. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be pigeonholed. But now I don\u2019t feel like I have anything to prove. I wanted to make something honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

The backbone of her current sound comes from a collection of \u201870s and \u201880s Yamaha FG75s. While they\u2019re not as flashy as one might assume, they\u2019re disarmingly warm and alive. In contrast, a lot of her textures began with pedals like the Chase Bliss Habit, MOOD, and the always-on Warped Vinyl, used less for fireworks than for atmospherics.<\/p>\n

Juggling tools and technology may be a more modern way of making music \u2013 and Wasner ensures her gear is used to serve artistic requirements, rather than the other way around.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I build the world first then write inside of it,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ll make a loop with Habit and let it sit. I\u2019ll come back the next day to find it\u2019s unlocked something emotional that I couldn\u2019t access otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Songs like Defeat wrestle with the challenge of being understood across a personal chasm, as she explains: \u201cTrying to build a world between the things I say and what I think they mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vulnerability exposed in The Life You Save informs how Wasner shares the music. She\u2019s been doing living room shows, playing in people\u2019s homes and connecting with every individual who attends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our current hell timeline, full band tours often lose money,\u201d she reflects. \u201cHouse shows let me connect human to human. They feel aligned with my values. I don\u2019t want unchecked growth; I just want a sustainable ecosystem \u2013 a small homey corner where I can keep working.\u201d<\/p>\n

The album emboldens listeners to stop performing resilience and admit they\u2019re human.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s is the best thing I\u2019ve ever made,\u201d Wasner says with a quiet certainty. \u201cIt has a confidence I couldn\u2019t have found 10 or 20 years ago. It\u2019s me now \u2013 creatively, emotionally, spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
