It seems that much remains true for ex-lovers Woody Allen and Al Pacino, whose high-profile romances with the Los Angeles native are back in the spotlight in the wake of her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-10-11\/reports-diane-keaton-oscar-winning-star-of-annie-hall-and-the-godfather-dies-at-79\">death<\/a> over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer face and laugh illuminated any space she entered,\u201d Allen, Keaton\u2019s \u201cAnnie Hall\u201d director and co-star, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/woody-allen-remembers-diane-keaton\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>The acclaimed and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/books\/story\/2022-02-23\/woody-allen-sexual-assault-allegations-essay-collection-skyhorse\" target=\"_blank\">controversial<\/a> filmmaker reminisced on his dating relationship with Keaton for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-10-06\/free-press-co-founder-bari-weiss-named-editor-in-chief-of-cbs-news\">the Free Press,<\/a> recalling how they first met in Manhattan in the late 1960s for his stage production of \u201cPlay It Again, Sam.\u201d Allen\u2019s first impression of the eventual Oscar winner was, he explained, as \u201cif Huckleberry Finn was a gorgeous young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe upshot is that she was so charming, so beautiful, so magical, that I questioned my sanity. I thought: Could I be in love so quickly?\u201d he wrote, later describing their evolution from collaborators to romantic partners. <\/p>\n<p>Keaton and Allen collaborated on eight movies, also including \u201cStardust Memories,\u201d \u201cSleeper\u201d and \u201cLove and Death.\u201d The 89-year-old director wrote that he \u201cmade movies for an audience of one, Diane Keaton,\u201d and heavily valued her opinions on his work. As Allen praised Keaton\u2019s radiating personality (\u201cShe was a million laughs to be around\u201d) he recalled learning about her struggles with bulimia and spending Thanksgiving with her family in Orange County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy we parted only God and Freud might be able to figure out,\u201d Allen wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Pacino, who shared the screen with Keaton in three \u201cGodfather\u201d films and dated Keaton throughout the \u201870s and \u201880s, is also thinking about what could have been. \u201cLooking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane who he\u2019s always called an \u2018amazing woman,\u2019 \u201d a source close to the 85-year-old actor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-15185451\/al-pacino-diane-keaton-death-regret.html\" target=\"_blank\">told the Daily Mail.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know he will forever regret he didn\u2019t make his move when he had the chance,\u201d the source added. \u201cFor years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, \u2018If it\u2019s meant to be, it\u2019s never too late for a do-over. But sadly, now it is.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>After news of Keaton\u2019s death spread Saturday, stars including Bette Midler, Steve Martin, Viola Davis and Kate Hudson <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2025-10-11\/reaction-to-death-of-diane-keaton\">paid tribute on social media<\/a>. \u201cWhat you saw was who she was,\u201d Midler said of her \u201cFirst Wives Club\u201d co-star. Keaton never married and is survived by two adopted children, Duke and Dexter Keaton. <\/p>\n<p>Allen closed his essay emphasizing the significance of Keaton\u2019s death: \u201cA few days ago the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it\u2019s a world that does not.
