Neil Diamond became an icon in the music industry in the mid-60s and stepped away from the spotlight after announcing his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease in 2018.<\/p>\n
The “Sweet Caroline” singer was recently honored with the Inspirational Lifetime Achievement Award at the 39th Annual Carousel Ball hosted by Chairman Dana Davis. CBS News Colorado anchor Michael Spencer served as the evening\u2019s host.<\/p>\n
At the event, Diamond honored fans with a live performance of his 1996 hit alongside Broadway star Nick Fradiani, who plays the singer in the Broadway play The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019ve been through it all now, and I\u2019m still coming back for more,” said Diamond, accepting the award alongside his wife and son.<\/p>\n
“I remember being a 15-year-old in Brooklyn and dreaming of a day like this… My sincere thanks to Barbara and Dana [Davis] for including me in this beautiful evening\u2026 I\u2019m proud to be a champion for this cause and grateful to be part of a night that brings hope to so many. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.”<\/p>\n
The event also honored Diamond with heartfelt messages from celebrities like Hugh Jackman and country star Luke Bryan.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m thrilled you\u2019re getting this award, because you are inspirational \u2013 not just through your music and creativity, but through your heart and your generosity. As a performer myself, you inspire me every single day. The way you connect with audiences, the way you connect to your music, the authenticity of who you are, it\u2019s everything to me,” said Jackman.<\/p>\n
Diamond was honored with the award for his continued service and dedication to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and the role he has played in type 1 diabetes care and clinical research.<\/p>\n
Before announcing his Parkinson’s diagnosis, Diamond was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The diagnosis influences his lifestyle choices and diet, with Parkinson’s ultimately being the reason for his retirement from live performances.<\/p>\n
