Instagram\/Dean Butler<\/span><\/p>\n Dean Butler<\/strong> was not fond of his character\u2019s story arc in a particular Little House on the Prairie <\/a>episode.<\/p>\n During the October 9 episode of the Little House 50<\/a>\u00a0podcast, Butler, 69 \u2014 who starred as Almanzo Wilder in the beloved NBC series \u2014 discussed the season 8 two-part episode \u201cDays of Sunshine, Days of Shadow\u201d with his fellow co-star Alison Arngim<\/strong>, who portrayed Nellie Oleson, and co-host Pamela Bob<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The synopsis<\/a> of part one of the episode reads, \u201cThe marriage between Almanzo and Laura [played by Melissa Gilbert<\/strong>] faces its first stern test when he falls seriously ill with diphtheria and later suffers a crippling stroke. Eliza Jane arrives to help care for her brother, but makes matters worse by babying him.\u201d<\/p>\n In the \u201cvery angry episode,\u201d Arngim, 63, explained that Butler\u2019s character has a stroke, \u201cwhich leaves him half-paralyzed and fully cranky.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe just loses it, he does not take it well,\u201d Arngim remarked of Almanzo. \u201cHe\u2019s bitter party of one.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere could have been a more noble way to play this problem, but it was written the way it was written,\u201d Butler chimed in. \u201cMichael <\/strong>[Landon<\/strong>, who starred and directed] never tweaked, he never turned me in a different direction because I was just getting what I got from it and so that\u2019s the way it ended up.\u201d<\/p>\n 2007 Kathy Hutchins \/ Hutchins\/Newscom\/The Mega Agency<\/span><\/p>\n Butler explained that upon rewatching the episode, he disliked the way his character was written.<\/p>\n \u201cI was so depressed thinking, \u2018Oh my god, this is so not what I think of when I think of what this character was,\u201d he continued. \u201cI love the beginning, and I love the end.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis is so not what I think of, you know, cultivating who this man was,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s actor narcissism talking. I\u2019m not separating myself from what we\u2019re being asked to do.\u201d<\/p>\n However, despite Butler\u2019s take on the episode, it performed well.<\/p>\n \u201cI have to say, for as depressing as it was, the numbers were spectacular on the episode,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n Butler also shared how the episode came to fruition.<\/p>\n \u201cThe underlying motivation for the episode was Michael had made the decision that he was going to step away at the end of the eighth season,\u201d he told listeners. \u201cAnd [producer] Kent [McCray]<\/strong> said, \u2018We need to find out if you and Melissa can carry this.
