Actor Keira Knightley apologized for lending her voice in the new \u201cHarry Potter\u201d audiobooks after she was told some fans are boycotting the book and film series over author J.K. Rowling\u2019s transphobic remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI was not aware of [a boycott] \u2015 no,\u201d Knightley told Decider over the weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI am very sorry,\u201d she added with a laugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She continued: \u201cI think we\u2019re all living in a period of time right now, we\u2019re all going to have to figure out how to live together, aren\u2019t we? And we\u2019ve all got very different opinions. So I hope that we can all find respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some fans, however, did not appreciate her so-called apology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThat laugh says NOT sorry,\u201d wrote one user.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe laughing makes it so insincere,\u201d wrote another. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Knightley\u2019s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Last month, Pottermore Publishing and Audible announced Knightley would voice Professor Dolores Umbridge in \u201cHarry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHarry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone\u201d will be the first to be released on Audible on Nov. 4. Rowling, who authored the book series, gave her blessing for the audiobooks, but she will not be involved in the production, according to the official Harry Potter website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In recent years, longtime fans of the book and movie series have expressed their disappointment in Rowling\u2019s transphobic remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2020, Rowling first stirred controversy<\/a> when she criticized an article that discussed \u201cpeople who menstruate.\u201d Rowling wrote on social media at the time, \u201c\u2018People who menstruate.\u2019 I\u2019m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?\u201d Since then, her transphobic comments have continued. In 2023, Rowling said<\/a> she would rather go to jail than silence her transphobic views, which she called \u201cthe reality and importance of sex.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Plenty of celebrities have spoken out against Rowling, including \u201cHarry Potter\u201d actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shortly after Rowling\u2019s first transphobic post, Watson, who played Hermione in the film series, defended the trans community, writing on social media<\/a>, \u201cTrans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren\u2019t who they say they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Radcliffe, who played the lead in all eight \u201cHarry Potter\u201d films, said in a statement via the Trevor Project<\/a>, a suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ+ youth, that \u201ctransgender women are women.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
