Star Trek: Discovery may be over, but the far-future timeline of that series will continue with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Set in the wake of Discovery’s finale, Starfleet Academy will see the revived Federation begin to build a new generation of Starfleet officers. As such, the show will feature a mix of young newcomers (the aforementioned Hot Teens!) and Star Trek veterans. The first trailer was released as part of NYCC 2025 and can be viewed below.<\/p>\n
Holly Hunter stars as the big boss of Starfleet Academy, Captain Nahla Ake, while Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr will reprise their roles from Star Trek Discovery. Mary Wiseman will also reprise her role from Discovery, but in a guest capacity. The show will also feature Robert Picardo as the same holographic doctor he portrayed in Star Trek Voyager from 1995 to 2001. Stephen Colbert will also lend his voice to the project as the Digital Dean.<\/p>\n
The younger cast includes Karim Dian\u00e9, Derrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Sandro Rosta, the main character. Rosta plays Caleb Mir, who has a personal grudge against Paul Giamatti’s half-Klingon, half-Tellarite villain, Nus Braka.<\/p>\n
The JJ Abrams Star Trek film had scenes set at Starfleet Academy, and it’s been visited from time to time throughout the franchise (The First Duty, anyone?), but this will be the first time we get to see an entire project based around Starfleet cadets. The legend goes that, after the financial disappointment of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the original plan for a sixth film was to a prequel about young Kirk, Spock, and McCoy during their Starfleet years. This is obviously a very different project than that ill-fated screenplay, but I’m excited to see where it goes.<\/p>\n
Star Trek is a tricky franchise. It’s impossible to please everyone, and YouTube comments are already calling it Star Trek: 90210 (as if that’s a bad thing!) and criticizing the diverse cast, as if IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) isn’t the guiding star around which Star Trek exists. But that’s a discussion for another day. There’s plenty of Star Trek to go around. I’m looking forward to Starfleet Academy, but also hope there’s room for Star Trek United, with Scott Bakula<\/a>.<\/p>\n For now, let’s just enjoy the trailer and get ready for the series to debut on Paramount Plus. The first two episodes will launch on January 15, 2026, with new episodes releasing weekly until the season finale on March 12.<\/p>\n
