Soulja Boy brought the energy and the nostalgia to Brooklyn this past Saturday (Oct. 11), lighting up the Barclays Center during Druski\u2019s Coulda Been Fest.<\/p>\n
Backstage, the \u201cBapes\u201d rapper spoke with VIBE about teaming up with the fellow viral sensation<\/a>, the hold he still has on Hip-Hop, and his latest surprise album. \u201cThat\u2019s my boy,\u201d he began with a grin. \u201cI\u2019ve been rocking with Druski\u2026 he\u2019s funny as hell. When he reached out, at first, it was just one show\u2026 we rocked out in Atlanta, and it was so crazy, we knew we had to run the whole tour.\u201d<\/p>\n The viral trailblazer, who once made an entire generation \u201cCrank That,\u201d proved he\u2019s still got it as he tore through a string of fan-favorite hits including the aforementioned hit, \u201cPretty Boy Swag,\u201d \u201cSuper Soak,\u201d \u201cSoulja Girl,\u201d and more. From song to song, the entire arena could be seen hitting Soulja\u2019s nostalgic moves, and rapping lyrics word-for-word.<\/p>\n And if there\u2019s one thing Soulja knows how to do, it\u2019s keep his fans on their toes. Earlier this month, the rapper and entrepreneur dropped his second album of the year, Swag 7, with no warning \u2014 a move inspired by Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s surprise release tactic.<\/a> \u201cThey always want you to wait\u2026 go to Spotify first, pitch it to people, drop on a Friday. I\u2019m like, f**k that. I\u2019m me. I\u2019m Soulja Boy. Let\u2019s just drop this bi**h right now,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n The 16-track project finds Soulja experimenting with fresh sounds \u2014 from that West Coast bass to more energetic beats \u2014 all while staying true to the essence that built his legacy. \u201cI just really wanted to come with a new sound,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to mix it up. It\u2019s definitely good to experiment with new energy.\u201d<\/p>\n Even with nearly two decades in the game, the Atlanta icon still takes his \u201cswag\u201d seriously, even though it\u2019s evolved since his baggy-clothes-and-Bape days. \u201cSwag is a way of life,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt got to be in you, not on you. It ain\u2019t just about your clothes \u2014 it\u2019s your aura, your personality, everything.\u201d When asked how he \u201cturns his swag on\u201d in today\u2019s time, Soulja laughed: \u201cGet some money. Hop up out the bed, go to work. That\u2019s how you turn your swag on in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n As for what\u2019s next, the self-proclaimed first-rapper-to-do-just-about-everything <\/a>has his eyes on a very high goal \u2014 literally. \u201cI gotta go to space,\u201d he said matter-of-factly. \u201cFirst rapper in space. I just wanna look down at the earth and be like, \u2018Damn, I did that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n But until then, he\u2019s staying focused and on the music. \u201cRight now, I\u2019m happy as hell,\u201d he said. \u201cI found where I want to be in life. It was tunnel vision on this project. No distractions, no bullsh*t. Just me and my engineer locking in.\u201d<\/p>\n Listen below.<\/p>\n Druski\u2019s Coulda Been Fest \u2014 which is part comedy show and part concert \u2014 continues through December hitting the major cities of Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n \u201cCoulda Fest was such a vibe that we had to run it back and switch up the concept \u2014 it\u2019s bigger, better and breaking global borders,\u201d Druski said earlier this year. \u201cThis won\u2019t be your typical comedy or music tour, it\u2019s going to be a cultural movement full of laughs, great music, and surprise guests.
