The critical response to Taylor Swift<\/a>\u2018s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, has been all across the board<\/a>, but there\u2019s one section of the discourse that Ruby Rose \u2014 a longtime friend<\/a> of the pop star\u2019s \u2014 isn\u2019t standing for.<\/p>\n In a series of posts on Threads<\/a> on Monday (Oct. 13), the actress hit back at claims that Swift is pushing a socially conservative narrative with her lyrics about marriage and wanting to start a family on Showgirl. \u201cAs someone who has spent many nights discussing the world, social injustice and life, with The Show Girl herself,\u201d Rose began, noting that she refuses \u201cto say [Swift\u2019s] name in the same sentence as the hate group, Wackadoodles,\u201d seemingly referring to MAGA Republicans.<\/p>\n More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cGiven her public position<\/a> against Trump, and his against her<\/a>,\u201d Rose continued of the 14-time Grammy winner. \u201cIf you are falling for the propaganda \u2018Trad wife\u2019 \u2018X,y,z\u2019 claims, you are most definitely walking into the biggest man made, rage bait, black hole. Stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Merriam-Webster<\/a>, the Internet-coined term tradwife \u2014 \u201ctrad\u201d meaning \u201ctraditional\u201d \u2014 refers to a \u201cmarried woman who embraces traditional gender roles and values.\u201d It\u2019s often applied to young women who choose to be homemakers, and it\u2019s \u201cclosely associated with a 2020s social media trend widely viewed as ultraconservative.\u201d<\/p>\n Swift is certainly a far cry from this definition of a so-called tradwife. The singer has spent the past 20 years building up one of the most successful music careers of all time, and she only recently got engaged at the age of 35 to fianc\u00e9 Travis Kelce.<\/p>\n On Showgirl, however, Swift does at times sing about wanting to get married and have children. \u201cWhen I said I don\u2019t believe in marriage, that was a lie,\u201d she croons on \u201cEldest Daughter,\u201d while \u201cWi$h Li$t\u201d finds her gushing about how she wants to \u201chave a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you \u2026 got me dr\u0435aming \u2019bout a driveway with a basketball hoop.\u201d<\/p>\n The references were enough for some people to suggest that Swift was promoting conservative ideals, including one Jezebel essayist<\/a> who expressed their disbelief that \u201cone of the greatest songwriters of our time couldn\u2019t think of a more interesting way to convey her deep love without a pick-me undertone or resorting to the girlhood fantasies of domestic bliss that the far-right is pushing hard.\u201d<\/p>\n But Rose isn\u2019t having any of it. \u201cIt\u2019s not true, and it\u2019s incredibly stupid,\u201d they added on Threads. \u201cIt\u2019s also embarrassing and hurtful to see energy put into this.
