At the 1996 Grammys, the album was nominated for Best R&B Album, and the title track earned nods for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.<\/p>\n \u201cThe state of R&B was in a rut [when I was making my album]. Everybody was so commercial, and nobody was trying to make real s***,\u201d D\u2019Angelo told Wax Poetics<\/a> in 2020 about the making of his now-iconic Brown Sugar album. \u201cBut I knew when I came with my s***, I wasn\u2019t going to sound like anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n Five years later, D\u2019Angelo\u2019s 2000 magnum opus Voodoo arrived to even bigger praise. Black Messiah marks D\u2019Angelo\u2019s final album.<\/p>\n In 2024, Raphael Saadiq told the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast that D\u2019Angelo had plans of dropping a new album. \u201cHe\u2019s excited,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cHe\u2019s working on six pieces right now and he seems super excited.\u201d<\/p>\n D\u2019Angelo is survived by his three children, including a son he shares with late R&B singer Angie Stone<\/a>, who served as his muse for Brown Sugar.
