Mel Gibson<\/a> has cast two actors to play Jesus and Mary Magdalene in The Resurrection of the Christ<\/strong><\/a>, the sequel to 2004\u2019s The Passion of the Christ.<\/a><\/p>\n Per Variety<\/a>, Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga<\/a> have been cast as Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. The casting news comes days after the report that Passion of the Christ stars Jim Caviezel<\/a>\u00a0and Monica Bellucci<\/a> would not return as Jesus and Mary Magdalene, respectively.<\/p>\n Ohtonen is a Finnish actor best known for playing Wolland in the British historical drama series The Last Kingdom<\/a>. Ohtonen has also appeared in Vikings: Valhalla and All the Sins.<\/p>\n Garriga recently portrayed Marie in Mission: Impossible \u2014 Dead Reckoning Part One<\/a> and its sequel, Mission: Impossible \u2014 The Final Reckoning<\/a>. Other notable roles for Garriga include Lauren Cole in the Blumhouse horror Bloodline and Magaly Castillo in the drama series When No One Sees Us.<\/p>\n The Resurrection of the Christ began filming scenes with a new cast in Rome last week. Besides Ohtonen and Garriaga, the ensemble includes Kasia Smutniak as Mary, the mother of Jesus; Luigi Pasino as Peter, one of Jesus\u2019 apostles; and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea who presided over the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. Rupert Everett will also appear in an \u201cunspecified small but important role.\u201d<\/p>\n Gibson returns to direct The Resurrection of the Christ from a screenplay he co-wrote with Randall Wallace. Gibson and Bruce Davey will produce, with Lionsgate as the studio behind the production.<\/p>\n Released in 2004, The Passion of the Christ became an extremely polarizing but profitable project. Gibson\u2019s religious drama earned $612 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing independent film of all time.<\/p>\n The Resurrection of the Christ will be split into two movies<\/a>. The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One opens in theaters on March 26, 2027, which is the Christian holy day of Good Friday.
