Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper has said his new film about a man who seeks purpose in the New York comedy scene was \u201cdirectly\u201d influenced by British humour. Is This Thing On?, which is part-based on the life of British comedian John Bishop<\/a>, was directed by the US star, 50, who is also known for directing and acting in Oscar-nominated movies Maestro (2023) and A Star Is Born<\/a> (2018).<\/p>\n

The film came to fruition after BoJack Horseman voice actor Will Arnett<\/a> met Liverpool<\/a> comic Bishop<\/a>, who told him that he had found stand-up comedy in the midst of a split from his wife<\/a>, deciding to do an open-mic night one evening as he did not want to pay the cover fee. Arnett\u2019s character in the film, Alex, has a similar experience, getting his start at New York\u2019s famed Comedy Cellar.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the BFI London Film Festival, Cooper told the PA news agency: \u201cIt\u2019s inspired by John Bishop\u2019s story, so that was the nugget of it and then he (Will) was working on that with John, and he was just telling me about it because we were friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I just sort of saw this image of him and I got excited about \u2018What if we set it in New York, and what if it\u2019s a movie about a relationship?\u2019 .\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked how British humour influenced the film, he said: \u201cI think directly, I think all of us have grown up on British humour and love it so yes, it\u2019s indelible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if it differs from US humour, he added: \u201cIt\u2019s hard to put an umbrella over everybody, the great comics are so unique.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arnett, 55, told the PA news agency: \u201cFor me there\u2019s a lot more nuance to British humour. And so we tried to inject some of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bishop got back with his wife Melanie after a short split<\/a>, and she attended the London screening with their children.<\/p>\n

Bishop, 58, told PA: \u201cI couldn\u2019t write it because it was too personal, so (a producer) said, \u2018Tell Will\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was eight years ago, and then Will said, \u2018Look, I\u2019d love to write it with my friend Mark (Chappell)\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then we spent a bit of time developing it, and then it just became their baby, and it\u2019s an act of faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re handing over a part of your life to someone else, and you hope that they\u2019re going to treat it properly, like you would with your child.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he\u2019s done more than that. He\u2019s treated it, he\u2019s nurtured it, and he sent it off to college.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film is coming to cinemas this December, according to Searchlight Pictures<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
