It has been 15 years since the last film directed by master of horror John Carpenter<\/strong>, but at the age of 77, the director behind Halloween<\/em>, The Thing<\/em>, and Escape From New York<\/em> is still touring his music alongside collaborators Cody Carpenter<\/strong> and Daniel Davies<\/strong>. The trio have records four albums of original music with Lost Themes<\/em> and scored four films together \u2014 including David Gordon Green<\/strong>‘s Halloween<\/em> trilogy.<\/p>\n So why can’t we get another John Carpenter movie?<\/p>\n More from Gold Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n An actual follow-up to The Ward<\/em> may still be a pipe dream for now, but a new project actually on the horizon will be the closest we’ve come to a new Carpenter film in a decade and a half.<\/p>\n Speaking with Gold Derby ahead of some upcoming live shows<\/a> alongside son Cody and Davies, Carpenter shared exclusive details of their next creative project, Cathedral<\/em>, which came to him \u2014 appropriately enough \u2014 in a nightmare.<\/p>\n Planned for release in 2026, Cathedral<\/em> is not a continuation of Lost Themes<\/em>, but a standalone record, telling one story, written by Carpenter’s subconscious.<\/p>\n Cathedral<\/em> began as a literal dream for the filmmaker. Upon waking, Carpenter thought he had the makings of a new film. “I thought it was a movie,” he said. “It was a story \u2014 a movie story. But I told Daniel, and he said, ‘Let’s do it.’ “<\/p>\n The trio proceeded to record an album that would have served as the score for the story Carpenter dreamt. “The idea behind Lost Themes<\/em> is that it’s the score to the movie in your mind,” Davies said. “But Cathedral<\/em> is the score to the movie in John’s mind.”<\/p>\n At a recent concert in New York, the trio debuted a track from the album, titled “Lord of the Underground,” with a sound more heavy metal-influenced than Carpenter’s previous output. “It’s a totally different sound for us,” Carpenter said. “We keep exploring and moving ahead.
