EXCLUSIVE<\/strong>: Altered Innocence has acquired all North American rights to\u00a0The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, the debut feature from Chilean writer-director Diego C\u00e9spedes.<\/p>\n The film made its world premiere in Cannes\u2019\u00a0Un Certain Regard\u00a0section, where it won the top prize, and has since been selected as Chile\u2019s Oscar entry in the Best International Feature category.<\/p>\n More from Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n Set in a mining town in northern Chile during the 1980s, C\u00e9spedes\u2019 film unfolds through the eyes of 11-year-old Lidia as rumors spread of a mysterious illness believed to pass \u201cthrough the gaze\u201d between men who fall in love. As fear and prejudice take hold, Lidia and her family must navigate the growing hysteria surrounding queerness, disease, and desire in a deeply patriarchal society.<\/p>\n The deal was negotiated between Frank\u00a0Jaffe\u00a0from Altered Innocence and H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Espeisse from Charades. Producers include Les Valseurs, Quijote Films and Weydemann Bros.<\/p>\n The film has also been a selection at Toronto, AFI Fest, Chicago, and San Sebasti\u00e1n film festivals.
