It sent shockwaves through Hollywood when Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late-night show, \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!,\u201d was taken off the air following controversy over comments made by the host about the killing of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk. Many in the industry, citing alleged pressure by the Trump administration\u2019s FCC, called for the show\u2019s network, ABC, to reverse its decision. But Kimmel is just the latest in a long line of television pundits and cable hosts (including Stephen Colbert<\/a> this summer) who have faced criticism.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d was suspended<\/a> this month \u201cafter comments that he made about Charlie Kirk\u2019s killing\u201d caused a backlash among conservatives<\/a>, said The Associated Press<\/a>. The late-night host\u2019s commentary was not about the actual shooting of Kirk, but rather about the right-wing reaction to it. \u201cWe hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,\u201d Kimmel said during his monologue<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The comments \u201cled a group of ABC-affiliated stations to say it would not air the show and provoked some ominous comments from a top federal regulator,\u201d said the AP. The decision, made by TV station conglomerate Nexstar, came hours after FCC Chair Brendan Carr \u201csuggested Jimmy Kimmel should be suspended and said, \u2018We can do this the easy way or the hard way\u2019\u201d during an interview, said celebrity.land<\/a>. Homeless people should either accept help or \u201cdecide that [they] are going to be locked up in jail. That\u2019s the way it has to be now,\u201d said co-host Lawrence Jones during a discussion about a North Carolina woman allegedly murdered by a mentally ill homeless man. \u201cOr involuntary lethal injection or something. Just kill \u2019em,\u201d Kilmeade replied.<\/p>\n Anger toward Kilmeade didn\u2019t occur \u201cuntil a few days later, when clips of the comments spread quickly on social media,\u201d The New York Times<\/a> said. Once the video made the rounds, though, \u201cheavy criticism followed\u201d and \u201csome called for his dismissal.\u201d Amid the uproar, Kilmeade offered an apology<\/a> days later. He \u201cwrongly said\u201d homeless people should get lethal injections, and apologized for the \u201cextremely callous remark,\u201d Kilmeade said. However, some thought the apology<\/a> didn\u2019t go far enough and urged Fox to fire him regardless.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n While Jimmy Fallon may be known for his consistently laughing and bubbly personality on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d the host came under fire in 2023 after a report from Rolling Stone<\/a> seemingly documented the show\u2019s problematic workplace<\/a>. The show has been a \u201ctoxic workplace for years \u2014 far outside the boundaries of what\u2019s considered normal in the high-pressure world of late-night TV,\u201d said Rolling Stone\u2019s report.<\/p>\n This was due to Fallon\u2019s \u201cerratic behavior, and has trickled down to its ever-changing leadership teams \u2014 nine showrunners in the past nine years \u2014 who seemingly don\u2019t know how to say no to Jimmy,\u201d said Rolling Stone.
