{"id":2093544,"date":"2025-10-15T18:23:37","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T18:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2093544"},"modified":"2025-10-15T18:23:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T18:23:37","slug":"australia-and-new-zealand-have-seen-a-31-collapse-in-streams-of-local-music-apra-amcos-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/australia-and-new-zealand-have-seen-a-31-collapse-in-streams-of-local-music-apra-amcos-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia and New Zealand have seen a 31% collapse in streams of local music, APRA AMCOS says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The question of how music streaming services\u2019 algorithms recommend songs is in the spotlight, in the wake of new statistics out of Australia\/New Zealand showing a steep decline in the share of local music being streamed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-advert__uber\">\n<div id=\"uberad\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arcane.lnk.to\/season2PC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to the latest <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apraamcos.com.au\/about-us\/news-and-events\/year-in-review-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Year in Review<\/em><\/a> from music rights management org <strong>APRA AMCOS<\/strong>, the share of locally written or composed music streamed in Australia and New Zealand has fallen by <strong>31%<\/strong> over five years, accounting for just <strong>9.5%<\/strong> of music streams in the two countries in 2024-2025.<\/p>\n<p>During that time, overall consumption of music on streaming and user generated content (UGC) platforms has grown by <strong>50%<\/strong>, and APRA AMCOS\u2019 revenue continues to grow, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>6.5% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in the latest fiscal year, to <strong>AUD $787.9 million<\/strong> (<strong>USD $513.3 million<\/strong>). We consume more music per capita than almost anywhere else on the planet, yet the ability for our members to be seen and heard is becoming more difficult every year,\u201d Ormston said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t happening because our music isn\u2019t good enough, and our surging export revenues prove our artists are among the best in the world. They\u2019re writing hits, filling venues internationally and competing at the highest level. The talent is undeniable. Our platforms are borderless, but algorithms favor scale and international repertoire dominate by default.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Underrepresentation of local acts has also been flagged as an issue in some European countries. In a recent interview with <em>MBW<\/em>, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Believe [561 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/believe\/\">Believe<\/a><\/strong> Founder and CEO <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"People &gt; Denis Ladegaillerie [125 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/denis-ladegaillerie\/\">Denis Ladegaillerie<\/a><\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/denis-ladegaillerie-sees-the-future-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggested<\/a>\u00a0European lawmakers should look at why algorithmic recommendations are creating an Anglo-American monoculture in EU markets.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that \u201c<strong>28%<\/strong> of streams [are] from local artists in the UK, <strong>36%<\/strong> in Germany, <strong>41%<\/strong> in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAustralians and New Zealanders are world-leading music fans. We consume more music per capita than almost anywhere else on the planet, yet the ability for our members to be seen and heard is becoming more difficult every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dean Ormston, APRA AMCOS<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ladegaillerie continued: \u201cOur DNA as a company is to support the buildup of local ecosystems, so when I see that in the UK, local artists in 2024 represented just 28% of streams \u2013 that\u2019s a killer for me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the UK had the same rate of local artists as you see in the US, Japan, or Brazil at 60-70%, you\u2019d almost triple the market size. That means more jobs, more local labels, more people. That gives you bigger [domestic] companies, more influence, and the ability to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>However, it\u2019s not entirely clear whether streaming algorithms are the problem; some data suggests the exact opposite.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/glocalisation-redux-big-european-countries-are-the-winners-in-the-latest-glocalisation-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent research<\/a> by music economist <strong>Will Page<\/strong> found that countries like France, Germany and Italy are benefitting from a \u201cglocalization\u201d trend that has seen local acts come to dominate the top of the charts, controlling at least <strong>75%<\/strong> of local streams in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>But these acts seem to be dominating the <em>top<\/em> of the charts, and not so much the <em>middle<\/em>. In Germany, for instance, despite eight of the Top 10 acts being local in 2023, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Luminate [194 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/luminate\/\">Luminate<\/a><\/strong> data <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/germans-recorded-music-business-generated-2-58bn-in-2024-up-7-8-yoy1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> that local acts accounted for only <strong>43%<\/strong> of the top 1,000 streams the following year.<\/p>\n<p>And Latin America\u2019s music scene has come to be <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/the-number-of-latin-music-listeners-on-spotify-worldwide-soared-986-from-2014-to-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominated<\/a> by Latin music (though not necessarily local acts in each country), according to data from <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Spotify [4,465 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Page\u2019s research suggests that, at least in some respects, streaming has improved the market position of local acts.
