Sky released a new teaser for their upcoming limited series, \u201cAmadeus,\u201d on Tuesday \u2014 though, it did not receive a standing ovation from fans online.<\/p>\n
The Sky Original, which is set to premiere in December, dropped a first-look for the reimagining of Peter Shaffer\u2019s 1981 play (that, in turn, inspired the 1984 film of the same name that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards).<\/p>\n
However, fans were quick to put the new iteration of \u201cAmadeus\u201d on blast, calling out the series for casting Will Sharpe, a half-Japanese performer, in the titular role \u2014 as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was historically not Asian.<\/p>\n
After one X user shared that \u201cliterally not a single person was asking for this,\u201d another fan commented on Sharpe\u2019s casting: \u201cI had no idea Mozart was East Asian. It\u2019s a good thing we have Hollywood to provide such historical accuracy here. Were something irregular to happen, like Hollywood portray Obama as a White man, I wouldn\u2019t bother watching.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cIs this the one where we find out that the true genius behind Amadeus is a paraplegic non binary Black woman that taught him everything,\u201d another person sarcastically wrote on X, \u201cand wrote his music?\u201d<\/p>\n Many also took issue with Sky declaring that they \u201cbelieve in original stories\u201d while simultaneously promoting a remake. One X user sounded off on Tuesday, \u201cCan we do something new that hasn\u2019t been done before? Maybe? Please?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy on Earth would we need a retelling of a familiar story, when this banger of the movie already exists?\u201d another weighed in. \u201cJust remaster in 4K and make an annual run in movie theaters. I\u2019ve watched it so many times and will watch again gladly.\u201d<\/p>\n A third noted: \u201clol they really ended that trailer with \u2018believe, in original stories??\u2019 Really?? After remaking perhaps the one movie that never, ever, needs to [be] remade??\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAmadeus,\u201d written by \u201cBlack Doves\u201d creator Joe Barton, sees Sharpe stepping into the shoes once filled by Tom Hulce as the famed classical composer.<\/p>\n Barton has since hit back at the criticism, writing on X<\/a>: \u201cI wrote this. As part of our promotion we are going to destroy every single copy of the 1984 original movie in existence and there\u2019s absolutely nothing you can do about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Paul Bettany, Gabrielle Creevy, Rory Kinnear, Lucy Cohu, Jonathan Aris and more round out the cast.<\/p>\n The series is produced by Two Cities Television, a part of STV Studios, in association with Sky Studios.
