Billboard\u2019s Power Pets is a feature focusing on musicians\u2019 best friends \u2014 no, not the humans, but the furry (and some scaly and feathery!) ones who bring extra joy and companionship to artists. Celebrities will be sharing sweet details about their beloved pets and how their furbabies enrich their lives. For the fifth story in the series, we talked to singer Remy Bond.<\/p>\n
Some little girls watch movies and dream of growing up to become princesses. But Remy Bond? She dreamed of one day having her own pet pig, just like Brittany Murphy\u2019s character Molly in the 2003 dramedy Uptown Girls \u2014 and now, she does.<\/p>\n
More from Billboard<\/strong><\/p>\n It all started with a Rolling Stone<\/a> photo shoot, for which the dream-pop singer also borrowed a dress that late star Brittany Murphy wore in the film. \u201cI was like, \u2018This is the perfect time for me to get the pig I\u2019ve always wanted,\u201d Bond tells Billboard of acquiring her porcine pet in March or April. \u201cI didn\u2019t really tell anyone at the shoot that I was going to be bringing a pig \u2026 so I just showed up with Moo.\u201d (Moo is named after the pig in Uptown Girls, Mu.)<\/p>\n \u201cIt was really funny, because I didn\u2019t know how much pigs squealed when you pick them up, so everyone at the Rolling Stone shoot was just, like, chasing her and too scared to touch her,\u201d laughs the artist, who was named to Billboard\u2018s 21 Under 21<\/a> list this year. \u201cBut I wish I had gotten her earlier, because then [I\u2019d have known] every pig squeals when you pick them up.\u201d<\/p>\n Remy Bond and Moo<\/p>\n While Moo was tiny \u2014 about 4 pounds, Bond estimates \u2014 and easy to pick up at the time, she says that tiny phase didn\u2019t last long. \u201cShe\u2019s fat as f\u2013k!\u201d the musician exclaims. \u201cEvery time I feed her, she doubles in size. I\u2019m too scared to weigh her now.\u201d<\/p>\n But for the rising singer-songwriter, whose \u201cSummer Song\u201d has surpassed 20 million streams on Spotify, that\u2019s just fine. \u201cI don\u2019t really want a teacup pig,\u201d she explains. \u201cI don\u2019t know, it felt really inhumane \u2026 I didn\u2019t want to get like, a puppy mill [pig]. \u2026 I\u2019m like, \u2018They don\u2019t even stay small anyways, so like, I might as well just get a normal pig that you know would have been eaten if not for me, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n As Bond tells it, her assistant found Moo at a farm nearby. \u201cWe convinced them to, like, lend us the pig,\u201d she explains. \u201cThen were like, we kind of just want to keep her, so that\u2019s how I ended up with her.\u201d<\/p>\n The singer did say there was a small adoption fee of about $100, which she considers a bargain. According to Nationwide Pet Insurance<\/a>, a teacup pig can cost up to $6,500, and can weigh up to 200 pounds once they\u2019ve fully matured.<\/p>\n Like many musicians\u2019 beloved pets, Bond says that Moo has found herself in the recording studio. \u201cThe day we got her, we brought her to a studio,\u201d the singer shares, and producers Jason Evigan and Mark Schick said they would keep her. \u201cThey didn\u2019t believe I\u2019d actually follow through with bringing her to the studio, so when I showed up with her, everyone freaked out.\u201d<\/p>\n Bond shares that though Moo caused a bit of trouble when she tried chewing on the various cables in the studio, the pig got to contribute to some music as well. \u201cShe\u2019s actually on [an unreleased] song,\u201d the singer teases. \u201cWe sampled her.\u201d<\/p>\n Remy Bond and Moo<\/p>\n As for those considering getting a cute little pig as a pet \u2014 and many celebs have, including George Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande and Jelly Roll \u2014 Bond has some advice: \u201cProbably don\u2019t get a pig.\u201d<\/p>\n Much as she loves Moo, the musicians says, \u201cPigs are hard.\u201d Bond reveals that Moo \u2014 who was living on her balcony for a bit \u2014 requires a trough, just like the pigs on a farm. And the singer thought at times that someone had broken into her home, but turns out it was Moo \u201crunning around feral upstairs\u201d and creating a mess.<\/p>\n Chaos and squealing aside, Bond says she adores Moo. \u201cI feel like I was just like, \u2018This is my girl. I\u2019m gonna like, feed her and take care of her,’\u201d she shares. \u201cShe\u2019s kind of just like a dog, except, like, super messy, and literally won\u2019t let me take her on a walk. I\u2019ve tried so many times.
