In 1967, folk-country singer Bobbie Gentry <\/strong>became famous for her song \u201cOde to Billie Joe.\u201d The unlikely hit about a young man\u2019s tragic jump off the Tallahatchie Bridge in Mississippi went to No. 1 on The Billboard Hot 100<\/a>\u00a0and stayed on the charts for 20 weeks.<\/p>\n At the 10th Grammy Awards<\/a>, Gentry won Best Vocal Performance\u2014Female, and Best Contemporary Female Solo Performance for the song, as well as the Best New Artist trophy.<\/p>\n But nearly 50 years later, fans are still confused by the meaning of the song\u2014and for good reason. Gentry never specifically explained the lyrics.<\/p>\n The song describes Billie Joe McAllister\u2019s girlfriend and her family at the dinner table after her Mama blurts out the news of his suicide. But a\u00a0 closer look at the lyrics shows the clan nonchalantly passing around black-eyed peas, biscuits, and pie as Papa declares Billie Joe \u201cnever had a lick of sense.\u201d There\u2019s also a line about Billie Joe and his girlfriend \u201cthrowing somethin’ off the Tallahatchie Bridge\u201d not long before his suicide.<\/p>\n In an interview for the book The Billboard Book of Number One Hits<\/em><\/a>, Gentry explained to author Fred Bronson that the song was \u201ca study in unconscious cruelty.\u201d \u201cBut everybody seems more concerned with what was thrown off the bridge than they are with the thoughtlessness of the people expressed in the song. What was thrown off the bridge really isn\u2019t that important,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n The singer noted that people had many guesses about what was thrown off the bridge. \u201cFlowers, a ring, even a baby,\u201d she said, adding that people could “think what they want.”<\/p>\n Gentry noted that \u201cthe real message of the song, if there must be a message,” revolved around “the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide,\u201d while eating peas and apple pie as their grieving family member sits unnoticed.<\/p>\n According to Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, Gentry once explained that she left the story open \u201cso the listener could draw his own conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n In 1976, Max Baer<\/a>\u00a0directed a drama film about the song.\u00a0The trailer<\/a> for the \u201cOde to Billie Joe\u201d movie teased, \u201cWhat the song didn\u2019t tell you, the movie will show you.\u201d In the movie, Billie Joe (Robby Benson<\/strong>) threw his girlfriend, Bobbie Lee\u2019s (Glynnis O\u2019Connor) <\/strong>rag doll from the bridge before his fatal jump into the dark Mississippi waters.<\/p>\n In addition to the tragic subject matter, Gentry\u2019s own story was rather sad. While she received accolades for the song, she never received producers\u2019 credit on it due to sexism in the industry at that time, Rolling Stone <\/em>noted.<\/p>\n Gentry, now 83, retired from the music industry and dropped out of the public eye by the early 1980s. Her last public appearance was at the American Country Music Awards on April 29, 1982, per The Boot<\/em><\/a>.
