Nick Offerman had more than a few Ron Swanson fans in attendance at FNB Field in Harrisburg on Oct. 15, for the opening night of the Harrisburg Book Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cBy applause, how many of you are familiar with Parks and Recreation?\u201d he asked during his appearance with co-author Lee Buchanan to promote their new book, \u201cLittle Woodchucks.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Offerman began an anecdote from the sitcom, in which he played laconic libertarian Ron Swanson: a man known for loving meat, whiskey, and working with his hands, much like Offerman himself.<\/p>\n \u201cI would eat steak, and they would give me money,\u201d Offerman said of his \u201cParks & Rec\u201d gig. \u201cAnd then when I was done eating steak, I could go make a sandwich if I wanted to. It was a really good job.\u201d<\/p>\n During a bit of a technical snafu, Offerman padded for time.<\/p>\n \u201cLet me back up, I\u2019ve lost my place,\u201d he said. \u201cBy applause, how many of you are familiar with Parks and Recreation? And who was your favorite character with a mustache?\u201d<\/p>\n Amidst audience laughter, someone seated behind me yelled out \u201cDuke Silver!\u201d which is also correct.<\/p>\n Offerman began to play a beloved song from the series, before saying \u201call of you filming right now, I\u2019m sorry: I\u2019m not gonna make it all the way through Lil Sebastian.\u201d<\/p>\n But to the crowd\u2019s delight, he did return to the song and sing \u201c5000 Candles In The Wind,\u201d by legendary Pawnee, Indiana rock group Mouse Rat. <\/p>\n And during an audience Q&A session, Offerman and Buchanan were asked if any of the jokes on \u201cParks & Rec\u201d were ad-libbed.<\/p>\n \u201cDo you want to take this one?\u201d Offerman asked Buchanan. <\/p>\n After she declined, he said \u201cI have to start this answer by saying we had the smartest writers. We never had to make anything up, because we had the best writers who ever wrote any show in the history of Western civilization. And that is an objective opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Offerman said that after they\u2019d gotten their shots as needed, they were often allowed to improvise.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were always making stuff up,\u201d he said. \u201cI made up lots of things. My favorite thing that I ever made up, was we were at Donna\u2019s lake house. I had a pallet or two of eggs. I was holding like four dozen eggs or more. She came in, looked at me like I <\/u>was crazy, and said, \u2018what are you making?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I said, \u2018eggs.\u2019\u201d Offerman concluded. He then added, \u201cHeheheh.\u201d<\/p>\n Offerman answered several other questions, including:<\/p>\n If you had to eat wood to survive, what wood would you choose? <\/b>\u201cUnfortunately, I think you would die. If you had to eat wood to survive, I have some bad news for you.\u201d He finally settled on balsa or basswood, as \u201cThose are the only ones you could actually chew, without tearing up your gums.\u201d<\/p>\n What is the fanciest wood?<\/b> After deferring to Buchanan, the two suggested it depended on the definition of fancy and where you were sourcing the wood from. <\/p>\n \u201cAnd around here it might be a maple burl, that\u2019s pretty fancy wood,\u201d Offerman said. \u201cBut then there\u2019s wood like black and white ebony, that\u2019s pretty fancy. Or Carpathian elm burl.\u201d <\/p>\n With a giggle, Offerman celebrated besting the question, saying \u201cI guess I pulled Carpathian elm out of my pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n What\u2019s one project from the new book that you think anyone could try, even with no experience?<\/b> Again, Offerman deferred.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to give this question to Lee, because I actually haven\u2019t read the new book,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n \u201cWell, you should do that on our next flight,\u201d Buchanan said, before suggesting toast tongs. <\/p>\n What is the key to pushing through with a hobby when you feel like giving up? <\/b>Buchanan touted the opportunity to enjoy a challenge, as well as taking time to step away and reach out to a friend for advice.<\/p>\n Offerman agreed, before adding \u201cthat\u2019s the thing about this fast-paced corporate life. The world is telling us to go faster and faster.\u201d Giving yourself that time to step away and go for a walk is vital, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cMe, I eat a great deal of sugar, and put on some Kool & the Gang, and I feel better for a time,\u201d he added. \u201cThen I fall down and become unconscious.
