Microfungi take the spotlight in Holy Destructors, the sophomore documentary from Lithuanian director Aist\u0117 \u017degulyt\u0117 (Animus Animalis), which will world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam<\/a>\u00a0(IDFA), which runs Nov. 13-23. THR can now exclusively debut a first trailer for the essayistic doc, which will then go on to the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival<\/a> (P\u00d6FF).<\/p>\n Debuting in the fest\u2019s Envision competition<\/a>, the film delves deep into the invisible world of organisms that emerge during the decay of organic matter. Merging archival and new footage, \u017degulyt\u0117 shows us growing fungi, taking the audience on a journey through a microscope lens.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cBiodestructors\u00a0are\u00a0microfungi\u00a0that\u00a0existed\u00a0millions\u00a0of\u00a0years\u00a0before\u00a0humans\u00a0and will\u00a0likely\u00a0outlive\u00a0us,\u201d reads a synopsis of the doc. \u201cTheir presence transforms bodies into extraordinary energy that nourishes the soil and gives rise to new life in this endless cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n Explains \u017degulyt\u0117: \u201cMy fascination for fungi started out with the way they decompose organic matter, a process that also works as a bioconstruction. This is the central theme of the film and the reason I was drawn to fungi. They are like magicians of a vanishing world, organically transforming it into something else. It\u2019s as if death and pain take on a new form.\u201d<\/p>\n Holy Destructors was produced by Uljana Kim for Lithuania-based Studio Uljana Kim, France\u2019s To Be Continued Productions, and Latvia\u2019s Studio Locomotive. It was supported by the Lithuanian Film Center, CNC, aide aux cin\u00e9mas du monde, Institut Fran\u00e7ais, the National Film Center of Latvia, and LRT.
