Can his latest love story make them scream, too?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nicholas Sparks likes making people cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He\u2019s the author who brought us the story of two star-crossed lovers dying side by side in <em>The Notebook, <\/em>the gut-wrenching saga of doomed romance between a high school bad boy and a cancer patient in <em>A Walk to Remember <\/em>and 23 other gorgeous but devastating tales of soulmates and heartbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWell, hey \u2014 <em>The Notebook <\/em>worked, and if it ain&#8217;t broke, don&#8217;t fix it,\u201d he tells Yahoo over Zoom of his writing style.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sparks\u2019 first novel,<em>\u00a0<\/em>published in 1996, was so successful that he has spent much of his subsequent career wondering if he should stop writing stories that make people bawl their eyes out and lean into something else. There, he starts a love affair with an otherworldly woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The supernatural element is new for Sparks, but he adheres to many of the same beloved tropes in his new book, out now: A coastal setting, a passionate coupling and, of course, extreme heartache.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"one-true-pairing\">One true pairing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although emotional devastation is certainly present, a few elements make <em>Remain <\/em>different from Sparks\u2019 other works. For one thing, it\u2019s a collaboration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The author\u2019s longtime film agent introduced him to M. Night Shyamalan, whom he met with in May 2023. Together, Sparks and the filmmaker created the story that would become <em>Remain<\/em>. Sparks turned it into a book, and Shyamalan wrote a script for a forthcoming movie he\u2019s directing, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, which will be released in theaters in October 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou&#8217;ve got to think of <em>Remain<\/em> as a coin \u2014 he did one side of the coin, the film, and I did the other side of the coin. It&#8217;s the same story, but different mediums,\u201d Sparks says. \u201cThere are tweaks that will make the stories feel different &#8230; but they have to, because they&#8217;re different mediums. One is a story told in words, one is a story told in pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sparks says he\u2019s been a fan of Shyamalan\u2019s movies for a while \u2014 the end of his 2010 book <em>Safe Haven <\/em>is actually a nod to the iconic twist in <em>The Sixth Sense. <\/em>Inspired by the horror director, <em>Remain<\/em> is also Sparks\u2019 scariest published work to date. I write a lot of sentences and I edit them a lot,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\" data-jump-link-target=\"\" id=\"meet-me-at-the-beach\">Meet me at the beach<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Each journey from the page to the screen is a little different for Sparks, but variety keeps him on his toes decades into his career.
