When Turnpike Troubadours reunited in 2021<\/a> following an uncertain hiatus, they turned to Shooter Jennings to guide them in recording their first album in six years, 2023\u2019s A Cat in the Rain<\/em>. The Grammy-winning producer also helmed the follow-up, this year\u2019s superb The Price of Admission<\/a><\/em>. Yet Jennings says that some of the Oklahoma band\u2019s fans weren\u2019t happy.<\/p>\n \u201cThe preconceived notion thing goes forever. If you look at Turnpike fans and what they say about the last two records I did, they say I ruined their careers. Because there\u2019s something about me that\u2019s polarizing to people,\u201d Jennings says on Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Nashville Now<\/em> podcast when asked about living with the pressure of being the son of pioneering outlaw Waylon Jennings.<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n Jennings \u2014 by way of his production work with artists as varied as Brandi Carlile, Lukas Nelson, and Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 Duff McKagan, and his own eclectic solo albums like 2010\u2019s Black Ribbons<\/a><\/em> \u2014 has succeeded in outrunning his father\u2019s long shadow. In fact, when he started his country career in 2005 with Put the O Back in Country<\/em>, he was blind to any expectations.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen we cut Put the O Back in Country<\/em>, I had no pressure, and there was no shadow. I moved to L.A. when I was 21 years old to be in a rock band,\u201d he says, \u201cand nobody knew who I was.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Jennings, few were even aware of Waylon \u2014 save for the guitarist in the influential grunge band Alice in Chains, whom he met one night at the Sunset Marquis hotel. \u201cThe only person who knew who Waylon Jennings was, was Jerry Cantrell. He goes, \u2018You\u2019re Waylon\u2019s kid? Right on.\u2019 And he was so nice to me from that point on,\u201d Jennings says. \u201cBut otherwise no one really knew who he was or really cared.\u201d<\/p>\n Jennings recently produced and released Songbird<\/em>, a posthumous album by Waylon Jennings made up of secret recordings the younger Jennings discovered a few years back.
