NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – As several cities continue to vie for a Royals stadium deal, North Kansas City\u2019s Mayor believes it may be inching closer to closing one. <\/p>\n

North Kansas City<\/a> Mayor Jesse Smith announced on Thursday, Oct. 16, that conversations continue with the Kansas City Royals<\/a> about the possibility of a new stadium. <\/p>\n

According to Smith, the discussions are \u201csubstantial\u201d and will ultimately involve the State of Missouri<\/a>, Clay County<\/a> and the City Commission<\/a> for a final framework. <\/p>\n

While some of these conversations will need to remain confidential, Smith said he remains dedicated to the spirit of accountability. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs Mayor, I remain committed to transparency throughout this process and want to share the priorities I have consistently communicated on behalf of our community,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n

The Mayor named several priorities moving forward with a potential deal, including financial health, neighborhood safety and more. <\/p>\n

Smith noted that any agreement will have to be a win-win-win to benefit the city, locals and the Royals. Meanwhile, gameday operations must not burden neighborhoods north of Armour Blvd. with traffic and parking. <\/p>\n

The project is expected to catalyze citywide improvements. The Mayor indicated there is already a master plan for upgrades to water, sewer and other infrastructure systems. Outside funds are expected to be needed. <\/p>\n

If a deal is reached, Smith said he expects clear and open communication with residents. Engagement with local businesses and stakeholders will be prioritized. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an honor to serve as your mayor,\u201d Smith concluded. \u201cI will continue working on your behalf and will keep you updated throughout the process. <\/p>\n

In July, Clay County Commissioner Jason Withington said the Royals had reached out with terms of a possible deal. <\/p>\n

Earlier in June, the county received approval for a Sports Authority to pave the way for a professional team in the Northland. Governor Mike Kehoe commended the move. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kansas City, Missouri<\/a>, Kansas City, Kansas<\/a>, and Overland Park<\/a> had also been hopeful for deals of their own. <\/p>\n

KCTV5 has reached out to city leaders, Clay County and the Royals for a statement and awaits a response. <\/p>\n
