But nobody seemed to understand that I was simply out of my mind with grief. My children had been taken away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">This is one of many revelations in Spears\u2019 memoir, which hit shelves Tuesday. The book, and the widespread buzz around it, has underscored how celebrity memoirs have become a vehicle for stars \u2014 especially women \u2014 to reclaim autonomy over their stories. While the genre has always had broad appeal, some experts and fans say its allure now extends beyond a demand for behind-the-scenes gossip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cCelebrity gossip gets very maligned as useless gossip, but it is a way to discuss human behavior,\u201d said Ashley Hamilton, 32, co-host of the podcast \u201cCelebrity Memoir Book Club.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">With Spears, for example, the prevailing public narrative around her was that she was a person who needed to be contained. Even her fans have taken Spears\u2019 social media behavior as evidence that she is erratic or in need of help. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Spears was\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/prewrite-britney-spears-conservatorship-termination-hearing-rcna4481\" target=\"_blank\">released from her conservatorship in 2021<\/a>. Just last month, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/britney-spears-dancing-knives-sparks-wellness-check-police-rcna117871\" target=\"_blank\">police did a wellness check <\/a>at Spears\u2019 home after people made 911 calls citing an Instagram video she had up showing her dancing with fake knives. Spears clarified in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CxwuhztLkwt\/\" target=\"_blank\">a later post<\/a> that the knives were fake and she was just trying to \u201cimitate\u201d fellow artist, Shakira.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s terrible that people talk about her that way,\u201d said Cat Hoggard Wagley, 30, a fan of Spears who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZT8ksPv8c\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted her thoughts about the memoir on TikTok<\/a>. \u201cThere are still people, not just celebrities, who are dealing with what she has dealt with in the mental health care industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">The late \u201990s and early 2000s, a time in which Spears made headlines almost daily, was a particularly unforgiving era for female stars, Wagley said, because gossip magazines appeared intent on humiliating these celebrities.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Reading Spears\u2019 own words helped give Wagley an added perspective on how the era also shaped people who grew up consuming these headlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWomen my age went through the culture that [Spears] did and at a different level we experienced the misogyny that she experienced,\u201d Wagley, who is a therapist based in Indiana, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen someone goes out there and gets vulnerable, it gives people permission to get vulnerable with themselves,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Spears\u2019 book comes on the heels of the release of recent female celebrity memoirs by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/jada-pinkett-smith-clarifies-will-smith-are-working-reconcile-7-year-s-rcna120758\" target=\"_blank\">Jada Pinkett-Smith<\/a> and Julia Fox. All three use their books to share how they felt controlled or\u00a0 misunderstood in their interpersonal and professional lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Fox\u2019s \u201cDown the Drain\u201d touches on her memories of a tumultuous childhood, her strained relationship with her parents and past experiences with drug abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cCelebrity memoirs seem to prove over and over again that just because you see one side of a person doesn\u2019t mean you know someone,\u201d\u00a0 said Hali Brown, 27, who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@booksonthebedside\/video\/7288451832769170720?_r=1&amp;_t=8goUIojKqWh\" target=\"_blank\">posted about Fox\u2019s book on TikTok<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Brown said she only ever heard Fox&#8217;s name in reference to her past dating history with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t remember that celebrities are people,&#8221; Brown said. &#8220;And I think celebrity memoirs are a really good tool for actually just humanizing the people that you see on screens all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Claire Parker, co-host of the \u201cCelebrity Memoir Book Club\u201d podcast, said these days, the cultural gravity of the celebrity memoir is less about the \u201ctea\u201d hashed out, and more about how stars\u2019 experiences mirror that of their fans.<\/p>\n<section class=\"inline-video inline-video--in-body\" data-testid=\"inline-video\">\n<div class=\"inline-video__background\">\n<div class=\"inline-video__player\">\n<div class=\"styles_gridStackWrapper__Z_AMc styles_videoContainer___xc7B video-container paused\" data-testid=\"gamma-video-player\">\n<div class=\"styles_gridStackWrapper__Z_AMc videoSlate styles_videoSlate__IvkAP\"><picture class=\"\" data-testid=\"picture\" data-flavor=\"focal\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1240px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_focal-860x484,f_auto,q_auto:best\/mpx\/2704722219\/2023_10\/tdy_news_7a_chloe_melas_britney_spears_231020-rumcov.jpg\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 758px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_focal-1000x563,f_auto,q_auto:best\/mpx\/2704722219\/2023_10\/tdy_news_7a_chloe_melas_britney_spears_231020-rumcov.jpg\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_focal-760x428,f_auto,q_auto:best\/mpx\/2704722219\/2023_10\/tdy_news_7a_chloe_melas_britney_spears_231020-rumcov.jpg\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">Beyond grappling with adverse mental health, anguish, or loss, Parker said there is a frequent motif of personal joy and self-discovery across the memoirs penned by female celebrities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019re 30 and we\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my god, if you don\u2019t have it together by tomorrow. You\u2019ve missed the boat,\u201d she said.
